PC upgrade Advice

Post by uberchef »

Hey everyone, I have quite a few questions regarding an upgrade I want to do. My current system is as follows:
Pentium D dual core 3,5 Ghz CPU
4 Gig RAM
7600 geforce 256mb
MSI Intel P965 Neo-F motherboard
400Watt PSU
The thing is it runs just fine, no real hiccups. I use it mainly for media, a bit of Adobe creative suite 3 and the occasional game. It runs most games ok as long as everything is set on low, I also play everything through a HD tv and everything seems to work. Media looks great and games run. But I know it is time for an upgrade so here are the questions.
Graphics card? Which one? Don’t really care whether its Nvidia or ATI. Budget about R1000 or less. Was thinking HD5670?
Now I realize that any new CPU is going to require a new motherboard and RAM unless I stick to a 775 socket, but with the way Intel sockets are going at the moment who knows what will come next but I read that the 1155 socket should be the one to stay.
Maybe AMD is the way to go? Advice?
Any advice on shops that have some good upgrade bundles?
Basically I need a new budget PC that can do HD and play games on a 42inch HD tv, even if the resolution isn’t too hot.

What budget do you have for the whole PC?

With a AMD system you could almost get away with R3500.

Decent AMD mobo - R1100
Athlon X2 265 - R738
4GB Corsair XMS3 - R613
ATI HD5750 - R1200

But don't take my word for it. Im just a pleb.

Total: R3651
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555 (OC'ed to 3.8Ghz)
CPU Cooler: CM Hyper TX3 P/P
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD5850
Motherboard: Asus M4A785T-M
Memory: 4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333
Case: Zalman Z7
Display: Samsung Syncmaster 2243BWX

You cant build a new system with that amount unless you cut corners. In many cases it will be fine and aslong as you are happy with playing games at normal hd I suppose we could slap together a system for you. However you will have to carry over alot of hardware.

4gb ddr3 1333 will set you back about R400 for 2x2gb sticks.
Going with the graphics card you chose because you really dont have a choice when going so cheap so say its R1k.
Windows 7 is going to cost you R1k and you cant skip that unless you already own vista or windows 7.
An AMD 890 or 790 will cost about R800-R1500 if I am not mistaken and then you can choose between a quad core athlon or duel/tri core phenom that will set you back another R800-R1400. And new psu R500 for 550W.

The biggest problem is that you dont have enough money for a decent 4-5 year upgrade and this will also be out of date soonish.

As a hardcore gamer I've started with a system that I have been constantly upgrading and for the first time 2 years ago when I got my i7 I am at the top as it goes with performance. I dont have a reason to move to a new system apart from saying mine is outdated. I would recommend you save more money, atleast until you have around R7000 and then look at the options again.

Or if your intention is to only play games and watch movies buy a ps3 or an xbox 360.

You could go for a Core i3 2100, R1000; 4Gb DDR 1333; R400; P67 Mobo, can get one for around R800 with no bells and whistles, that's R2200. Then if you harvest the screen, optical drive, OS, motherboard and PSU from your old machine, you can look around for a Geforce GTX 550 Ti for around R1300 odd. That system will blow any AMD system out the water on most fronts including gaming, media etc. Alternatively, take a look at EveTech, they do upgrade bundles.
