ADSL Router Questions

Post by GreyWolf »

So 2 weeks ago I went into Dion Wired to buy an ADSL Router. Went to the shelf, picked up a box and went to the check out queue. Luckily (for me) the queue was long, and while I was waiting I suddenly had an urge to see what the router looked like. Went back to the shelves, and asked an assistant if he could open a box for me, so that I may check the connections. SO it seems these particular routers had an RJ45 socket instead of the RJ11 for the phone line. Left the store (and router) and went somewhere else.

Am I missing something? can an RJ11 plug fit in the RJ45 socket?

No. what you want is a router modem combo, not just a router.
I would recommend Netgear, having used them, (I still have one working perfectly after 7years)

IT was a router/modem combo, but the plug for the phone line was RJ45 (or something as wide). Basically I am just wondering if Dion is selling modem routers that are not compatible in this country.

Like I said, I went to IC and got myself another ADSL router / modem.

An rj 11 will fit the rj45 socket, just the center 4 pins will make contact. Though it sounds like they almost sold you a router that takes a Ethernet on its WAN. It is an option some people use, but it won't dial your Adsl.

These types of routers are if you already have a modem... For example, the Black Iburst desktop modem has a Ethernet port on it, which you can dial a PPPoE connection straight from your PC, or connect it to that particular router and it will dial the PPPoE connection for you and well... route.
