Laptop charger won't work?

Post by Rajiv »

My mother recently got an old laptop from my aunt. It ran out of power and now it won't even charge. I've looked in the manual about this problem and they say that the battery needs to be replaced. Another thing is that the laptop came from London and it consists of a "foreign" plug so we bought the standard SA plug and replaced the foreign one with it and yes, it is connected properly!

AFAIK if the charger is working you should be able to remove the battery and run the laptop from just the mains... if this doesn't work I suspect the charger.

No. So what u are saying is that I should open the charger and take out the batteries. Then, without the batteries, connect the charger to the mains?

Wut?!

I think you should not touch anything with electricity, it is dangerous and in your case could be fatal.

In this link you should see all manner of laptop batteries... the type that your laptop has to power it when it is not connected to an electrical source. Remove this item from the laptop. Connect the charger to the laptop and then try and switch on the laptop... if the laptop is working, and the charger is working it should (AFAIK) come on. If it does, go and buy a new battery, the same as the one you removed...

Do not be silly, plug the charger into the wall socket and switch on, do not plug the into the computer, now take a multi meter and place one lead above the black line and earth the other, you should get around 19 volts, if not the charger is gone.

About a new battery, if the charger is delivering voltage but battery will not charge, then get a new battery.

There are no batteries in a charger, if you do not know how to test it take it to someone that does. On the side of the charger it will tell you what output it should be giving.
