Which Anti-Virus?

Post by doo_much »

Like the subject says, which anti-virus should I get for a client?
He's high risk - internet, memory sticks galore, 'funny' e-mail hub etc etc.

Oh an he wants to run my Access Control system off this PC. :|

I would suggest a device that klaps him everytime he does something stupid on the internet/opens dodge emails or plugs in unknown memory sticks.

I've been using and abusing MSE, picks up everything I've thrown at it (and my mother and sister haven't managed to break it yet, which is saying something).

And turn off all the autoplay things on his PC, helps slow memory stick viruses

Mum had a mem stick virus on her machine MSE didn't detect so I'm not to keen on it.
I've got Norton but I really haven't got a clue how 'good' it is. And I don't open e-mail attachments willy-nilly and share files with friends. :|

or avira/kaspersky/eset...

no matter which one you opt for, any risky behaviour will assist in a successful infection, so be sure not to offer any guarantees...

i would spend good money on any system offering this feature...

If it can be programmed to dish out additional klappe everytime invoice payments are overdue - so would I.

And thanks for the serious advice.

Oh, also turn off system restore. And once you've set his pc up the first time, ghost it so that when he breaks it you don't have to waste a week reinstalling and setting it up again

i should note that a successful infection is no indication of AV performance... AVs will always lag behind the malware authors...

added to which is the newer breed of polymorphic/adaptive malware pretty much defeating image detection, which means you're back to heuristic/behavioural analysis to hunt the sods down...

it all comes back to the user... anyone who goes through life thinking "i've got an air bag, i'm SAFE!" is looking to get damaged...

Maybe program a USB launcher to shoot projectiles at his face when infections are detected

I have been running Avira (pay version), Kaspersky and Eset -> all have been very pleasant with no nasties rearing their ugly head. I found Eset the most user friendly so that is what I'm currently using on my home PC's.

STAY AWAY from Bitdefender Avast. I hope I'm not too late. PLEASE. What OS is he using? Anything above XP and BD has so many problems. It's just not what it used to be. It was also my favourite so obviously for clients it's what I recommended. After just too many install problems, large updates and general bugs and crashes caused by viruses disabling Bitdefender Avast, I opted to steer clear.

I now put my faith in Norton Bitdefender. Obviously, go for Internet Security for your clients needs. It's had it's downs, but Norton Bitdefender has more than made up for it's last few years of headaches. Flash drive viruses are no match for Norton Bitdefender. CPU and Memory usage are the lowest compared to others. I don't even know Norton is on my PC. Haven't had one install problem or one crash and no disabling of the Norton Bitdefender services without my permission.

If you're going for a free version, Avast 5 Bitdefender free is top on my list. Stay away from AVG Avast. Very reliable, also detects all flash drive viruses. Does what you need it to, and for free.

Norton is a horrible piece of <censored>.

No, it can't even delete a flash disk virus. Not the one I had anyway. Had to remove it by hand. It installs toolbars and widgets everywhere. It's slow and useless.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say the worst antivirus in the entire world at this moment is Norton.

And while I'm ranting, steer well clear of McAfee too.

Nothing more annoying than having a message popping up with the words: "Threat detected. Unable to clean/delete."

Uhm, gee thanks. Remind me why I have you installed again...?

Comodo Internet Security Pro.

It's free and it's awesome. It can be a bit irritating while it's learning what programs you want to allow to do things, but it stops after a while. It also has a "Sandbox" feature that protects your system in the case that some program/virus runs and tries to change system settings.

Avast is fine. So far, Avast has done a better job than trend micro ever did on our PC's. It's just a bit complicated to learn to use.

I'd stay clear of Norton and Kaspersky and Mcaffee. Kaspersky does a reasonable job at detection but it's riddled with bugs and extremely resource intensive.

Are you teaming up with that mouse? I have the paid for version of Avast and it is brilliant! Nothing has snuck through since I installed it two years ago. I see in the new PCFormat that Bret agrees :D
