Has my cellphone been compromised?

Post by StarPhoenix »

Is it possible to hack cellphones and steal information such as cellphone numbers via the non-internet portion of
cellular networks? A colleague emailed me at work this morning to tell me that she had received four blank smses
from me this morning. I keep my keypad locked, so it is unlikely that the contents of my pockets accidentally pressed just the right buttons to send messages to someone in my contacts list as I walked to work this morning.

I have a Nokia 1208.

A 1208 is a series 40 phone probably, which means it's unable to host a virus. As for hacking even through the internet 'portion', i doubt that's possible either. Does your phone have bluetooth?

My cellphone doesn't do any form of wireless networking.
It handles calls and smses only.

Th only way I know how to do that is by hacking the phone through Bluethooth. The apps are freely available and serve as a Proof of Concept. Although they do require that you are a fool when accepting the Bluetooth connection.
What I type has nothing to do with the people that employ me.

There are methods to spoof cellphone numbers (You know how spammers send you spam from your email address? Well, someone can send you an sms and show someone else's number) How ever, the methods are slightly more complicated.

My guess is her phone is acting up, or she received a spastic command on her phone that was misinterpreted or the Service provider has a bug in their system somewhere

Alternatively, it could just have been a glitch with the network. It's been known to happen.

Then I truly have crossed the gap into madness.

Beware, Cat:you could be next. :run4hills:

Someone at work told me that locking the keypad is no guarantee that messages will not be sent.
Is this true and what are the changes that jostling would nudge just the right buttons for messages to be sent?
