D-Link DSL-2640U modem
D-Link DSL-2640U modem
Does anyone know how to set up a D-Link DSL-2640U modem for ADSL? I tested the ISP's instructions for various other modems and VPI/VCI settings but I still cannot connect to the internet. On the modem diagnostics I receive the following:
Test the connection to your local network
Test your ENET(1-4) Connection: PASS
Test the connection to your DSL service provider
Test ADSL Synchronization: PASS
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: FAIL
Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping: FAIL
The connection created in Windows 7 actually connects (with WAN miniport PPPOE) and authorizes with the credentials, but alas, no internet

What ISP? I set my DLink up just 2 days ago And it is a bit more difficult than other routers.senile wrote:Does anyone know how to set up a D-Link DSL-2640U modem for ADSL? With Mweb. I've never had trouble setting up modems for clients before, but this one seems much more complicated

Is there a specific setting you're not sure about?senile wrote:With Mweb. I've never had trouble setting up modems for clients before, but this one seems much more complicated

Re: D-Link DSL-2640U modem
Lots:
Modulation type
Phone line pair
Capability - bitswap /SRP
VLAN mux
Service category - UBR/VBR/CBR
Bridging - LLC/VCMUX
If I use the bridge mode in WAN setting, the DNS points to the router in automtic mode. Not sure if that is even editable in bridging mode since I can't find settings to change it

I'm going to give you the settings I'm using. Axxess didn't list all the settings on their website either.senile wrote:Lots:

I'm NOT using bridge mode though.
---------
Service category - UBR without PCR
Enable - QoS
PPPoE connection
Encapsulation mode - LLC
Enable - Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and Local Ports

Re: D-Link DSL-2640U modem
I changed it to a PPPOE connection with those settings, all the diagnostic test all succeed except DNS. Router says "cannot ping primary DNS server". Windows says "can't communicate with DNS server". I have 196.43.42.190 and 196.43.34.190 for DNS which I assume is mweb's. Tried others but still no luck...

Did you set those DNS settings in Windows or did you get them from the router? Allow Windows to get an IP and DNS automatically?senile wrote:I changed it to a PPPOE connection with those settings, all the diagnostic test all succeed except DNS. Re: D-Link DSL-2640U modem
Windows gets IP and DNS from the router automatically
edit:
default gateway seems to set itself to the 3G card's when that connects, and back to the router's own IP when the 3G is plugged out... Even via the 3G connection the router is unable to ping the DNS server. Not sure if it should be able to but it might be useful info

Re: D-Link DSL-2640U modem
Disable all other network connections and see if that helps at all?senile wrote:Windows gets IP and DNS from the router automatically

(I'm guessing here I'm afraid.)

Re: D-Link DSL-2640U modem
I have a suspicious feeling that Telkom is behind all the trouble because I brought one of the company modems to test (IS router) and guess what... DNS server problems

Re: D-Link DSL-2640U modem
By the sound of it, you configuration is more complicated than mine.
I did not need to do much in the way off fiddling to get ADSL up and running
on my 2640U.
I take it that you have tried setting up your router from a friend's house and/or used
I can't guarantee that they will be any help, but here are my settings:
