Forums now with ads?
Dont know when it was started but this morning I logged onto the forums and in the corner of my eye I got a glimps of a nokia add. Is this the way the forums are now going or is this a temporary fund increase?

Re: Forums now with ads?
I must agree that the Nokia advert is annoying. I wouldn't mind if it was just a single image, but the animation as you go from one thread to the next gets on my nerves.

Re: Forums now with ads?
Ads help pay for the site and this forum. At least there is only one ad. It could be much worse.
Just think of those forums with the automated advert on the first reply to every thread.

At PCFormat and our parent company Panorama publications we follow a strict code. Advertising and editorial never work together. The editorial team writes the mag and the advertising guys sell ad space. That way you know that the editorial opinion is free from bias. We do not change our reviews for advertisers.

I don't mind an ad or two if it keeps our forum alive!

Just glad the ads do not involve searching and displaying keyword ads. With jamin around we might get some really weird ones....

Re: Forums now with ads?
I'm just thinking I saw somewhere "No ads in your signatures" and Avatars + picture sigs has to be small to accomodate low bandwidth connections. I just got a 4mb connection so no complaint about stuff slowing me down. I was just thinking that Nokia could switch to a still image ad.

I must agree with rusty though. Evony ads will make me very twitchy.

Re: Forums now with ads?
I understand the reason for ad's, you need to make money. However I have a problem with certain types of ad's namely the moving, flashing type because they distract and annoy me to no end. At home I will not use my ad blocker but here at work I am blocking all moving and flashing ad's starting with one...
/Should see how news24 shows up for me, very bland and basic. You want too see a website that goes overboard with flashing, annoying ad's look no further than news24...

Re: Forums now with ads?
Anakha I think the idea is to get your attention. And hate them as we might - the cleavage on those Evony ads do get one's attention don't they?
Personally I find advertising and sponsorships in general to be a pain and rather daft.
Am I going to leave MTN fo Vodacom because they sponsor both the Super 14 finalists? (Hypothetically of course.)
NO
Will I do that if they take all that money and lower their charges by 5%? Hell yes!
Same with advertising.
