Call of Duty 7 Black Ops - Now with dedicated servers :P

Post by StarBound »

I am almost certain that there was a thread on this somewhere but since forum search turned up nothing let me be the first to create its own thread.

While I would like to remain optimistic over pc gaming the article in the June mag on piracy broke my hope of ever playing a pc game properly again. While it might want online activation or some crappy form of drm if everything rings true and they do included dedicated servers then maybe, just maybe that sales figure of MW2 might go from 300k to 1.5million. The previews looks good. And I might finally have found the game to replace the indominateable cod4. While MW2 has better console sales COD4 does still hold the pc favourite. And its been 3 years coming to find a suitable replacement. So enjoy some of Gametrailers previews and interviews.

Nice, also eagerly awaiting this one... I also preferred MW to MW2. In fact the best to me was BC2. I really hope this lives up to the trailers though, because I like the looks of it...

I'm quite curious to see what's in store for the next one after this though, considering Infinity Ward has split, although I heard the best developers from there that left are either joining Treyarch or forming their own company...

The only thread I recall on this game was this one, but let's keep this one as the offical COD7 thread.

I'll keep an eye on it, but development by Treyarch doesn't fill me with much hope.

If MW2 had dedicated servers I might have placed MW2 over cod4. But cod4 is slightly slower paced and more tactical in the sence that you can lean left and right making from behind cover shots oh so nice. September is still a way off but at the pace the year has gone it might be sooner than we think.

Prestige Edition of black ops will have a remote controlled car. I think this is ps3/xbox exclusive again. But after the night vision goggles of MW2 this feels like a lame attempt.

MyGaming wrote: South Africa currently not on the grid to receive dedicated local Black Ops servers

When it was announced last year that Modern Warfare 2 (PC) would not feature dedicated servers, PC gamers around the world breathed a collective sigh of despair. Dedicated servers allow low latency, always-on, stable battlegrounds for PC gamers to log into whenever they want. The peer-to-peer matchmaking system included with Modern Warfare 2 is wrought with bugs, and it is often impossible to find a game.

So finding out that Call of Duty: Black Ops will be getting dedicated servers was music to the ears of many PC gamers, myself and loads of MyGaming forumites included.

However, it appears that there is yet another twist in the tale.

Site director of planetcallofduty.com and planetmedalofhonor.com, Josh Peckler, tweeted the following: “Let's do this! First off dedis will be rented from GameServers only!”

This means that GameServers.com will be the exclusive agents for managing Black Ops servers. According to Gameservers, there will be Call of Duty: Black Ops servers positioned in the following locations:

(AU) Sydney, Australia

Montreal, Canada

Toronto, Canada

Vancouver, Canada

(EU) Frankfurt, DE

(EU) Denmark

(EU) Paris, France

(Asia) Tokyo, Japan

(EU) Amsterdam, NL

(EU) Warsaw, Poland

(RU) Moscow, Russia

(EU) London, UK

Atlanta, Georgia

Chicago, Illinois

Dallas, Texas

Denver, Colorado

Los Angeles, California

New York / New Jersey

Phoenix, Arizona

San Jose, California

Seattle, Washington

St. Louis, Missouri

Tampa Bay, Florida

Virginia/Washington D.C.

None of these locations are close enough to South Africa to offer decent latencies, which means that the multiplayer situation for Black Ops is looking dire.

We have contacted Gameservers, Activision, Treyarch, as well as local gaming service providers iGame and WebAfrica for feedback. Hopefully some sort of resolution can be found, but as of now, it looks like local PC gamers will be kept out in the dark on this one.

A huge thanks goes to Maplassie for helping research and compile the above information.

Update

We just got this email from Gameservers:

I'm afraid we do not have a datacenter in that region at this time. We are looking to open new locations were there is high demand, but I don't have any specific information as to if/when we would be doing so in the region.

If you want dedicated Black Ops servers in SA, why not email Gameservers at support@gameservers.com.

It will be no surprise then that South Africans will pirate the living daylights out of this game with dedicated server hacks. Not like Activision cares though. There should be a law to impose a limit on the amount of profit that a company can receive for games/software. Let them work for their money instead of copying their own product for free and selling it at 700% profit.

Or, just buy Medal of Honor instead.

A law on limiting profit? This isnt a charity.

Yes the game will be pirated and yes there will be hacked SA servers due to this. The loss of maybe 6000 copies will not bother them. Only the fact that they lost sales to piracy and not the cause of it. I am gonna see how this handles on XBL once SA gets its own Live.

Still your choice to pirate the game or not. However if you buy the game, crack it and make that it runs with features not included in the original package then why would anyone complain? Although that's the difference between a VW beetle out of the box vs a souped up VW beetle street racer.
