PCF Reader

Post by 1gn1t0r »

Hello everyone

This application is an easy way to navigate through PCF Cover Disc contents. I created this application because sometimes I just copy all the software to a directory on my computer and it was quite difficult to search for something specific.

I have created an application which easily lets me search content copied from the PC Format Cover Disc. Let me explain.
Since I do not have regular internet access, I usually copy a lot of programs that seem worthy from the cover disc to the computer, but recently I wanted to search for something and it was just a bit too messy to comfortable view all the applications, so I created a program which makes things easier.

So I just wanted to share it, if anybody else wants it

Yeah, and variable naming. I reserve the right to do grievous bodily harm to the next person that I see who labels their controls "Form1".

Not so bad if you're working with just one form. I don't name controls I don't refer to in code.

It's still bad coding practice, which is something I take seriously. Put it this way, people working under me who code badly do not work under me for very long - if I see a "Form1" from a new coder, I will personally see to it that that coder is asked to leave our employment. I have no idea what that Office Freak (some know what I'm talking about) is still doing around the place...

Some of us work under a lot of pressure, with constant deadlines.
We don't have time to name every label next to a textbox that says "Name:" , "Surname:", etc.

Especially if no-one refers to it in the code either. It might be "good" coding practice, but it's an enormous waste of time.

What I take most grief for are variable naming conventions. Putting an "i" in front of an int, an "s" in front of a string...

I have trouble with that (in that I will name controls but not give them the accepted names.) I will use things like cbo and txt but in the actual field names I don't do the str, int, dtm, etc. Far too much trouble and the repercussions are enormous (the extra work that generates by conforming to the practice).

But I agree - Form1 should have a correct name - even if it is just Main. (or frmMain)

Bladerunner, I hear what you're saying there - however, I've found that people who don't name their controls/variables correctly are usually also sloppy in other areas of their coding, and dealing with sloppy coders is an intensely frustrating experience, particularly if the sloppy coder is an Office Freak that will argue with you that his sloppy way of doing things is correct even when all the other devs say it isn't.

Another thing to consider - just because you're not using that control now doesn't mean to say it won't be used at some point in the future. Also consider the person who maintains your code after you, or your fellow devs if you're working on a team project - you may know exactly what "TextBox42" is, but they won't. Having inherited both good code and bad code from others, I've come to appreciate the value of making my code easy to understand for the person who will take it over from me one day.

(I suppose we should stop derailing this thread and take this discussion to the Programming forum... ;) )

What about screen shots of the program so that we can decide if its viable to download or not?

You will have to forgive Ron2k, he works in a company that deals with some very demanding clients so he has learnt to dish out only the best possible work. Fixing it another time is just not in his mental process.

Personally I don't have the patience to code. When I tried my hand at HTML I spent most of the time making sure all the code was neatly arranged just so that I could find issues easier. Let us not forget the infamous Kodak website. OH THE HORROR!!!
What I type has nothing to do with the people that employ me.

Maybe 1gn1t0r is a n00b at coding? So I'd give him a break. If he is, kudo's for showing your work! I feel naked when people look at my attempts :(
