Take Down CyberGames!

Post by AngryRabbit »

This is a call to everyone that reads this to rise up together for the greater good of man, for E3, and for the Cheese.

Cybergames has, for the last four years, been aiding in the steady rise in the price of PC games. By selling masses of copied and cracked games to the unwitting South African public, we as consumers of the original products are forced to compensate by paying higher prices for our software.

I have emailed Cybergames (My letters can be seen under the topic: For all you software pirates) as well as reporting them to the BSA(Business Software Alliance). Thus far Cybergames has been less than forthcoming with explainations about their activities, they also claim it's all legitimate.

I propose that we all email Cybergames with our enquiries; Why do they have cracks on their CDs, how are they able to charge less than half the price of the originals, how have they managed to remain open this long?
We must also report their activities to the BSA, ensuring that they take notice of this serious problem.

Here are their contact details:
CyberGames: postmaster@cybergames.co.za
BSA: www.bsa.co.za

Lets take 'em down.
Post your emails and their replies here.

Here's my mail to Cybergames

Dear sir

I stumbled upon your site by chance and I am amazed at the variety of PC games you have at such incredible prices! They are competitive even with the cheapest fleamarkets ( which sell illegal copied games, btw. )! I am curious as to how you can manage to sell games at such low prices? Why are your rates based on the amount of CD's each game takes up? Why is it that you have games for sale that have not even been released by their official distrubutors yet?

Thank you for your time

Francois Linde

Here's my contribution...

Dear sir(s),

I wish to inform you that the readers of a popular computer magazine have decided to take a serious stand against companies and individuals that are distributiong illegal software. Based on your prices and your means of distribution, and also the fact that many readers have bought games from you that needed cracked .exe's, we have reached the unfortunate conclusion that you are indeed distributing illegal software. Although many people buy these games from you out of ignorance, there are a lot of gamers in South Africa, who realizes the detrimental effect pirating has on the game industry. If however yopu feel that these allegations are unjustified we would like to here your explanation on these matters.

Please be advised that your activities have been reported to the proper authorities.

Kind Regards,

(My Detail)

Here's the reply from Cybergames
Hi Mr Francois,
We import these games ourselves and they r the same games as in the flea
markets.
We send the titles by speed services and you collect them from your post
office counter.
The only difference from the box version is that u cannot play our games
over the internet.
Thank you for your interest

Probably for games like Warcraft or Diablo which require Battlenet for online play. Obviously pirated versions aren't going to run on battlenet.

 It really hacks me off how slimy they are, acting completely innocent like we are complete morons!

Patch file?!!! How stupid do they think we are?

Gee, I wonder why that is? Maybe it's because IT'S NOT AN ORIGINAL!!!

Guys, write back asking why you can't play online if the games are legit.

They've blocked my address, so I can't mail them anymore.

I thought I would be diplomatic and send some constructive advice...

My reply :
Thank you for replying to my queries, I have some concerns though :

If your games are the same version as flea market games, then they are illegal and the authorities will shut your business down and probably slap you with a hefty fine, or even a jail term.

Would it not be a better idea to reform Cybergames into a company that deals with legal merchandise rather than pirated software? There's a lot of interest in games and I think you would do well if you sold the box version of the games you carry. Plus as an added bonus you wouldn't have people complaining about problems that arise from having cracked games and you also would not have the authorities breathing down your neck.

It's just a thought. Use it, don't use it, it's your choice.

Here's the reply I got...
WE ARE LEGALLY IMPORTING THESE GAMES, AND DECLERING THEM AS CD ROM GAMES,
PAYING CUSTOMS DUTIES, VAT, FREIGHT CHARGES AND FORWARDERS FEES FOR THEM. IF
THERE WAS A PROBLEM ABOUT THE LEGALITY OF THE PRODUCT, SURELY WE WOULD NOT
BE ABLE TO OPERATE OPENLY AND OFFICIALLY OVER THE INTERNET FOR THE LAST FOUR
YEARS.

THIS IS CALLED PARALLEL IMPORTS AND NATURALLY IT BOTHERS THE CERTAIN
MONOPOLY TYCOONS.
THEREFORE FROM TIME TO TIME WE ALSO RECEIVE ACCUSATIONS IN THESE LINES BUT
WE REPLY TO THEM SAME AS ABOVE AND THEY DONT BOTHER US FOR A WHILE AGAIN,
UNTIL NEXT TIME AROUND.

IF YOU STILL HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT THE LEGALITY OF OUR ACTIVITIES, YOU ARE
WELCOME TO GET MORE PROFESSIONAL EXPLANATION FROM THE ATTORNEYS, A. GROBLER,
PHONE NO. 011-3942736.

WE HOPE YOU FIND THIS EXPLANATION SATISFOCTORY.

BEST REGARDS
CYBERGAMES
We didn't say they are IMPORTING it illegally, did we?

Good idea, but they seem to think they are dealing with idiots whom they can just brush aside. I bet their response is as evasive as ever. Have you reported them?

nope - I am almost sure that the BSA will be aware of these people - in my opinion the best way to go about this is just to irritate the **** out of them like we are doing - they must have been through this drill a hundred times aready !!

If i dont get a response by tomorrow at the latest i will report them to the BSA and probably drop a line to piracy@microsoft.com - above all I think microsoft will be able to make the most of this - oodles of cash and a name to defend as opposed to us who are really just making this guys day a bit sh!tty.
