TomTom - Suggestions??
TomTom - Suggestions??
Hey Guys
I'm in the market for a TomTom. I have one of 3 models in mind:
1) TOMTOM XL V3 - R1702.64
2) TOMTOM GO 630 Classic - R2125.58
3) TOMTOM XXL Black - R2125.58
They all seem to have the safety cameras installed, which is a must (so sick of paying fines at those robot speeding cameras )
What do you think

Re: TomTom - Suggestions??
How urgent is it to get ?
You can probably save for an extra month or two - since the difference is minimal.
AND you can be more cautious, and cause less death and destruction while speeding like a hooligan in this extra 'saving' time.

Well not so urgent, by the end of this month I'll have enough saved for any of those.
Lol, don't think I'm much of a risk to society doing 70 odd in a 60 zone

Old ladies crossing the road, might pee themselves.
Why choose TomTom ? Garmin is the premier choice for most .. I am sure there are Garmin variants in the same price range ?

look at garmin. Large garmin community in sa at www.garmap.co.za. Also garmin gets map updates for SA usually twice a year.

I would not choose a TomTom Garmin are pretty good in my opinion and it is easier to get help with them etc ... I heard that TomTom's were having issues in the country!

I have a TomTom and there is nothing wrong with it. It all boils down to personal preference and the amount of money you want to spend.

Looked at Garmin but I like the whole idea of the TomTom map share. I see Garmin map updates are quite pricey.

I have Tom Tom and prefer it to the Garmin I had before.
As for the choice - much of a muchness. Depends on what features you are after.

Re: TomTom - Suggestions??
Once you have registered your Garmin updates are free, you may also buy the CD for R10.00 plus postage, this has everything on it, Southern Africa.
I have owned or do own the following;
Tom Tom XL (wife) (She complains about lack of way point saving)
Garmin Nuv 200 - old and no longer available
Garmin Nuvi 1410 top of the range (R4000)
Your decision must be based on your needs. the Tom Toms shortcoming is the fact that it will not save a way point if you are more than 10 meters of a plotted road. So if you drive to entrance 10 at Eastgate, it will not plot this for use in the future, so it no good for finding your parked car or the entrance you last used. On a visit to a different city that you do not know, this can be annoying. The Tom Tom only has town and city plotted road works. ( And of course all national roads)
The map sets on the Tom Tom and Garmin are exactly the same, there is no difference. You pay dearly for Tom Tom updates, Garmin Mapsource and updates off the Net are free.
Anvic, local Garmin agents, are excellent when it comes to help, they are knowledgeable and always happy to help, they answer email within hours.
Tracks4africa are also available for Garmin.
So Garmin is the only true all rounder on the market, Tom Tom is quite adequate for main routes and city use. The choice is yours. Buy what meets your needs.

@ Monts yes I do ... family can be helpful sometimes! Because they do camping, diving and 4X4ing they stock things like Garmin and certain cameras etc etc ...
Like I said using a GPS is all about the user which he/she would prefer ... but considering the rumors I would not want a device that I may not have support for in this country

Re: TomTom - Suggestions??
Having used both brands I prefer TomTom.
I have just played with teh TomTom XXL and I am very impressed especially with the price.
Just remember that Garmin get their maps from TomTom. My TomTom One does the job perfectly and I enjoy using it. There is nothing to be concerned about with regards to TomTom's service and local support.

Re: TomTom - Suggestions??
Garmin has better support and maps than Tom Tom in SA. Fact.
Tom Tom is popular in Europe and Australasia, but in SA I'll definitely stick with Garmin.

Re: TomTom - Suggestions??
Yes I have heard the same as Ryan.
Tom Tom overseas are very strong, but I think Garmin still have the edge in SA.
However the Tom Tom for motorcycles is apparently excellent.
May have a look at that if budget allows.

What about Navigon, are they any good?
And what would the recommended GPS be for hiking, something small with a decent battery life?
