how can i tell what changes to the registry a certain program makes ?

Spybot has a registry protection app that will warn you when your registry is being edited however, apart from trawling though all the entries you currently have and maybe searching the net for a list, there isnt much I know of for current entries.
Soon Google will know everything...including how to divide by zero

check out MJRegwatcher
it tells u everything u need 2 know - u can create logs ,registry backups ,quarantine "nasty" entries and much more ....
get it from pendriveapps.com (i think...just google it.)
there's also another 1 called reg from app : its description sounds like what u need

There used to be an app called RegmonNT then MS bought it and eventually improved it so now its called ProcessMonitor.
