I hate to disagree again Ruad but your buddy is wrong. You can indeed get VB to multi thread, but it is not very stable at all and I guarantee it will crash. The way you get VB to multi thread is by calling functions in the win32 api that fools VB into multi threading. The VB language in itself makes no provision for threading.

BTW, I have developed quit a few solutions using VB. It is great for rapid app dev and you can extend it's features a lot by dipping into the windows API. I do understand that VB is essentially easier to learn that C++ and it is a good starting point. But you should eventially move on.

How to make games ,How to make games

Making games with gamemakers that dont require any programming normaly ends up poor.

Face the facts to make a propper playable game you need programmings skills.

My advice is learn something simple like VB
It might not bee the best lang on the market but you can develop powerfull app's with it.

It is fully compatible with directx.

Use Direct x instructions to make a game.
Then use Maybee max 3d studio to make objects like models, guns or cars.
save them as DirectX .X file and simply load them with a bit of direct x code.

My point -> dont use Gamemakers.
I once made an unfinished game. And the only prob was nobody belived i made it.

Hmmm yes one man alone can program, script, write the story, model the characters, skin the models, record the sounds, do all the dialogue, write the music, record the music, make the textures, build the levels within... hmmm let's see... about 10-20 years!! And then the game is built on 10-20 year old tech...

Don't be silly. If you're doing a game for the fun of it and you don't have a team to back you then of course you can use game makers. You will only be limited in certain areas.

There's a misunderstanding here that I seem to get that gaming is all about programming - at least, that's where the topic has led.

Whether it's for fun or not, game design and development requires for example (some people have multiple talents) :-

Modellers
Skinners
Graphic Artists
Level Designers
Sound Designers/Engineers
Programmers
Scripting
Writers

If your doing a project for fun and lets say it's either an open source modern game engine or a TC for a commercial game engine, if you want to at least compete on a fun level with the pro's, you are going to need a team these days. There's no two ways about it.
Even if it's just a team of 2 - programmer/artist.

I've worked on a project called M3A with a bunch of other level designers some time back - it was for Rocket Arena. The project took quite some months to complete and there was no programming involved - we all contributed levels to a pack.

The website is no longer active, but it got good reviews at LVL :-

http://www.planetquake.com/lvl/comments.asp?id=814

Other stuff I've done :-

Arenaholica for Quake3 (DM level)

Image
http://www.3r.co.za/bushboy/arenaholica

Mental Oasis for Quake3 (DM)

Image
http://www.3r.co.za/bushboy/mentaloasis

I've also done a ton of texture work in the past.

Yeah, blowing my own trumpet, but the fact of the matter is, I've been messing with game design (mainly level design and texture work) since 1996 and I've only ever released four maps (altho I've done about 100 textures)

My first site and attempts at learning level design is still online :-

http://www.planetquake.com/qpp/

That was for quake1, sadly, my second site for quake2 I gave for someone else to take over and they messed it up.

As for the future - well, I want to learn how to model - with Doom3 and Half-Life2 coming up, as a level designer, modelling will now be a neccessity. I need to give up my various other hobbies and concentrate on this, as I may make another career move in a few years into game design.

Hang a left by http://www.doom3world.org - lots of like minded individuals from all over the world interested in all aspects of game development.

Game makers are great to use "if" your know what your doing...But you don't need any "programming" skills to build a game.

I have a copy of a 2d scroll game maker and you don't need to know programming for it.However there are gamemakers that do need some sort of programming.....!!

But why download it and say you need to be a programmer to use it....doesn't it say ..."you need to know c++..." or "support for Java or flash scripting....??"

And note that you don't need these skills to make a great game.
It all comes down to what software you use to make your program with.....!!

Newest program I added to my ...collection.....
Xfrog 3.5 by greenworks(c) for creating any plants from grass to trees and flowers...

Oh Forgot about milkshape 3d.

Only1 it wouldn't take that long to make a Pro level game
Have a look at this.

Game engine would take anything between 6 to 12 months.
Your using a ready build game engine so you have shorten your time greatly

Take a game with say 18 levels it takes 3 to 4 weeks per level = 756 days for the levels.

So it would take about 756 days working on it between 4 to 8 hours a day. and don't come with...."I don't have time..." or "I'm only doing it for a hobby.." Why do you want to build a game if you don't have time.

Happy game play and development..!

This one, it doesn't show the full scene but I like the lighthouse in the background I animated the spotlight but is doesn't show in the background.

A very dark room with a light shining in
Image

Got plenty more but I didn't want to spoil the upload time for you guys so till I get some thing better.."villageidiots"...the rest would would have to wait.

Nice Screenies, Wiz... the long time I was referring to was in answer to zip who recons one should not use game makers. IF you have to do it all without a game maker \ game engine - the programming, art, etc. yourself without a dev team, it probably will take that long, well maybe not like 10 years but it will take quite a while.

Is your game going to be a 3d shooter or something else? What kind of theme do you have, horror \ humour \ sci-fi \ realistic?
