Re: Official Android OS thread - PCF style
M1ke - I will be in CT from the 21st. If you need help rooting your phone I will be more than happy to help. Just drop me a PM.
Other wise follow the guide below.
Below is the link to a guide on how to root the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613
Download Flashrec, you will need to google for it and DL the apk. transfer to your phones SD.
Here is the link to the recovery image I used, instead of the one that guide recommends. I have found it has the most options and functions.
http://rapidshare.com/files/320335178/r ... v1.5.2.img
Once its installed do yourself a favour and use the recovery mode (Home + Power) to create three partitions on your SD card. You will need a 32mb Linux swap file, a 500MB ext2/3/4 partition and the rest is for your FAT32 partition.
I am using the MoDaCo 3.0 ROM based on Android 1.5 (its very fast)
http://rapidshare.com/files/320335178/r ... v1.5.2.img
You WILL need to wipe the data partition on your phone.
If you open the recovery mode you can use the SD: update command to load the custom ROM and the updates. This is much easier than the adb route. You will need to save the radio and teknologist files as well as the ROM onto the root of the SD. The teknologist file is an update to the kernel. The mod ROM uses v1.8 of that kernel.
download the latest radio ROM here (this is an update ROM, use the recovery mode to install it. Home + Power = recovery mode.
drop me a PM and I will email this guide plus all the files to you. You will however still need to download the ROM of your choice. 100MB files don't work nicely with mail servers.w
Short version
Download Flashrec - http://flashrec.googlecode.com/files/fl ... 090909.apk
Download recovery ROM - http://rapidshare.com/files/320335178/r ... v1.5.2.img
Download ROM - personal preference but I suggest MoDaCo 3.0
Download Radio ROM - http://www.romraid.com/paul/hero/update ... signed.zip

Honestly you have to be a complete tool to bork your phone.Prime wrote:HTC announced on Twitter that 2.0 Rom for the hero will only be released in Feb. Frankly, I'd rather wait, than risk borking my phone. The hero is completely skipping 1.6 it seems.
If you follow the guides its almost impossible to stuff it up.

@KB
Thanks so much for the info - I was struggling to find a comprehensive guide on the net to Rooting my Hero.
I'll give this a try, and let you know. Thanks a million! Much gratitude
EDIT: Is there a list of recovery images somewhere with features, etc. ? Or should I just keep an eye on the XDA forums?

Given that you borked your phone with apps in the android store, I gotta lol.
I'll look at the guides but will probably pass.

After looking round I have found that XDA is the best place to look. They tend to link all the resources you need.M1ke wrote:@KB

Re: Official Android OS thread - PCF style
What is the major difference between the Android Os, and the Symbian Os? I dont know. I was thinking of getting the Htc Tmobile MyTouch, but I also want something reminisent of the Nokia n85, or the Samsung Innov8. the Nokia and samsung run on the s60 symbian. While the Htc Mytouch runs on Android. WHATS THE DIFFERENCE? Can you still download apps of symbian? Thanks guys.

Re: Official Android OS thread - PCF style
Hi hacheriya and welcome.
Symbian is old and is limiting the capabilities of Nokia's devices. You CANNOT install Symbian apps on an Android phone the question is why would you want to. If you hve an idea in your head then chances are that there is an Android app that does it already.

Re: Official Android OS thread - PCF style
Sorry for the late reply:
I meant a CUSTOM ROM, not a ROM from HTC. Wait until 2.1 arrives, and then get a ROM off XDA. There will be one, no doubtM1ke wrote:well that's what I thought, but in order to get the ROM you need to enter the serial number of your phone. Entering a serial number from RSA simply disallows the download.DAE_JA_VOO wrote:Oh come on guys, if you want 2.1, install 2.1 yourselves. You don't need your service provider to send you the update or Google to verify it based on your geographic location. There will be a ROM for this. So backup the closed source apps like Gmail and so on, install the custom ROM, and then install the closed source apps.
Also, the ROMs that are going to be released are going to be for specefic carriers, like Sprint, etc and are aimed to ONLY work for those carriers. Won't that be a problem?
Apologies if I'm sounding ridiculous, I don't have much experience with how ROMs work with the Android platform.
That guy that used to mod cases. Now I take photos. True story.
