Also, is there any reason to pay R500 more for Ultimate? What more do I get for the money. According to the 7 website I only get BitLocker, and the option to switch between all 35 languages.

Greets,

I think seeing the options like this is best:

Thanks. I think Professional should be sufficient.

Yeah, you don't need anything more. I've just finished installing and configuring Pro, and it's perfect for my needs.

Yup, if I had bought the upgrade I would've gone for Pro. My Ultimate Retail was R100 more though so just went for that.

What is it about Ultimate that you HAVE to have which the rest don't provide? (Other than the word "Ultimate")

It's more than the word ultimate..... Oh ok no it's not LOL just looks good when booting. Anyway every Win7 disk has all the versions on it already. It just depends on the key you enter

Anyway that table just provides the major differences there are subtle differences in the OS too and now I can't think of one but I will post the differences later.

No, that was Windows Vista. Windows 7 DVDs are specific to the version you purchase. Unless you hack them, but that would be nawty now, wouldn't it?

According to Microsoft, no - you need to do a clean install.

According to Microsoft yes. It is possible though, with a quick change to the .ini file that controls version checking...

I posted something about that once. Katie threatened to tie me half naked with leather straps to jamin's bed if I didn't remove all reference to it within 30 seconds.

Why exactly? It's referenced by almost every MS journalist I follow (Paul Thurrott, etc). An old colleague at MS even told me about it as a work around...

Oh well, feel free to remove it, although I didn't say how it's done. ;) People would know it's possible without somebody telling them, since everything is possible...

Either way, you should do a fresh install. Doing an in-place upgrade is always a bad idea.

I officially said goodbye to my RC last weekend. Fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit now whirring quietly away on my drive.
Definitely is an improvement from the RC I must say.
Small things but it all adds up to a better overall experience.

Read above man... Yes it is possible, but you need to make changes to a file, which some people consider breaching the terms and conditions outlined in Microsoft's license agreement.

As Ett says though, it's really a pretty good idea to do a fresh install, especially when moving from a Beta or RC release to the final product.

On the topic of upgrading the RC. This morning I listened to the latest Windows Weekly (142) and once again Paul and Leo discussed the workaround, so yeah. One that thing is quite significant though, is that the RC is the Ultimate version of 7, so you would have to be upgrading with an Ultimate version as well as far as I know...

Ja, it would have to be an upgrade to Ultimate. And it would have to be 32-bit/64-bit specific too, depending on what you have installed. Obviously.

Yeah every which way you look at it, it's best to do a clean install.

That being said, the Katy-disapproved upgrade option worked flawlessly on one of our computers here at work.
