Who should pay for "School Fees"?
I just had a haircut and it got me thinking.
Should appies be able to charge the same rates as qualified/skilled artisans? In theory this seems preposterous, but it does seem to be the way things are done.
My haircut is a good example of this. The guy who normally cuts it was busy with another customer and I was in a rush, so it was cut by his apprentice. Now, the guy did a reasonable job and it does look fine, but it took about twice as long as it needed to and that's unacceptable.
If the mentality is that their product is a good haircut, then fine. But actually, the product of a hairdresser would be a good haircut, delivered timeously with the customer happy about it. Taking 50 minutes to cut my (already relatively short) hair is unacceptable and throws out schedules etc. So whilst I got a decent haircut, I was not a 100% happy customer.
The basic question then is, do you think it's fair to request a discounted rate for an appie's work? Do you think it's fair for the customer to carry the cost of "school fees"?

UrBaN, give the guy a break? You were a young padawan once too.
If he doesn't get the practice in, he'll never be able to become a successful barber / hairdresser. Would you rather have a quick and choppy cut or a cut with a perfect end result that takes a bit longer?
As for the fee: I'd imagine that it would be slightly less than the normal barber fee (if the apprentice is still very wet behind the ears).

Why did you get your hair cut if it was short already?
Are you some sort of ******* metrosexual gaylord or something?
Wait... don't answer that, I think I already know the answer.

Re: Who should pay for "School Fees"?
having worked in that industry, it's probably because it was your hair...
this is odd, as most salons do charge a reduced rate and very often don't even pay the appies all that much... it's about experience more than trade, (although they may get something from the local college for the effort)...
if you're being charged the full rate and feel this is unfair, do what every other normal adult would do... take your business elsewhere...
<edit>
and before we get suitably worked up about this, how much did the cut cost you?

rustypup, I'm not sure what he got paid, i just know I was charged the full price.
The cut was R100. I normally wouldn't pay that, but there's a function tonight and it was urgent.
To clarify, I'm not upset or bothered by either the haircut or the price, more curious about the general concensus on things of this nature.

To deal with the rather hairy subject at hand, all I can say is NEVER give your barber any reason to dislike you.

I worked for a hairdresser once. Just washed hair and swept - no cutting or anything.
And yes - we learn something new every day

I can see rusty fitting in such a place perfectly. Though I do feel sorry for the complete strangers.Tribble wrote:I picked up that comment too jee. I don't know puppy but I would assume that he wasn't really suited to a profession where you have to be chatty with complete strangers

Re: Who should pay for "School Fees"?
You paid R100 bucks to have your already ridiculously short hair shortened? Maybe mine is just cheap but damn!
I suspect the hairdresser got a large cut of the appie's money. The Appie maybe made 50 bucks from you, half that money will go to rent, electricity and water and all the other overheads.
