Admirable, however I do not see the point. Obviously if one is interested in map browsing at home it would pass the time. A a navigation tool installed in your car it would not work, luckily we already have excellent SA GPS maps available for navigation, even in the bundu!

Re: Street View for ZA
Well, a while back I looked into google maps as a gps source- some of the SE phones sport google maps- and decided against because it was lacking. I just had a look at some rondom places- and there is already an improvement. Whether this is a result of the new partnership or just google itself finally getting round to it, I don't know, but I like it.

lancelot, Did you read the article?
It is a means for tourists and visitors to 2010 to get a feel for the city and navigate their way around a 3D graphic of the city - it is not a navigational tool.

Yes, I read the article, a partnership with Toyota, I can tell you right now that it will not be free, also navigating with a cell phone on the streets of Cape Town would be suicide, The phone will be stolen within ten minutes.
Re: Street View for ZA
If they asked me what I wanted though, I'd say:
FIRST: Routing / Driving Direction (maybe it works somewhere else in RSA? but not in Cape Town)
SECOND: Street View

Okay, so this is actually here as I literally JUST passed one of those Prius camera cars, almost moer'd off my bike, but wow, awesome. (Here's to hoping I'll be on Google Street View)
Re: Street View for ZA
So when browsing, if we see a dude bailing off his motorbike we will know it's you? Awesome

I'm going to check it every day.UrBaN wrote:So when browsing, if we see a dude bailing off his motorbike we will know it's you? Awesome
I wanted to do a pose, but by the time I actually realised I wanted to do it, I was like, oh *****!
Re: Street View for ZA
If you see it again, flash your "You are being monitored" T-shirt. You can even start a group about it on Bookface! Or one about ordering McD ... oh, wait, nvm ...WiK1d wrote:I'm going to check it every day.UrBaN wrote:So when browsing, if we see a dude bailing off his motorbike we will know it's you? Awesome

The weekend papers were saying what a wonderful tool this would be for muggers and burglars.
Re: Street View for ZA
Fantastic
Both myself and my neighbour were robbed last week - he was robbed at gun point. This is not something I feel they need.

I was out just now, and managed to trap it at a cul de sac, lololol.
I think he was mad at me for following him as he raced away at quite a pace

M1ke, Yea we're all fine thanks. Luckily we didn't wake up when they were in the house, could have ended badly.
WiK1d, He raced away in a Prius?
Cool pic though

Re: Street View for ZA
Thread resurrection time, as there's a few new developments regarding this.
Firstly, I'm sure that most of you are aware of the whole story regarding Google picking up data from unsecured wireless networks as they collected the Street View data; if you haven't, here's the original Slashdotting over it. (I'm sure there's a thread on it here, just can't seem to find it - if any of you has any more success than I did, shout and I'll merge it into this one.) It seems that the Aussies are particularly upset about that; they've gone far enough to launch a police investigation...

Then, news from the deepest, darkest dungeon of South African web forums (aka "My Broadband") is that the ZA launch is coming up, probably this week even.Slashdot wrote:"Those who thought the brouhaha over Google's scanning of Wi-Fi networks by its Street View cars was over (whether you believe it was deliberate or not) are destined to be disappointed. News comes from Australia over the weekend that the Australian government has referred the matter to the Australian Federal Police for investigation. The country's Attorney General, Robert McClelland, was quoted saying, 'Obviously I won't pre-empt the outcome of that investigation but they relate in substantial part to possible breaches of the Telecommunications Interception Act, which prevents people accessing electronic information other than for authorized purposes.'"
Kia kaha, Kia māia, Kia manawanui.
Re: Street View for ZA
I saw the newspaper report regarding the situation in Aus, not good in my opinion, damn is all out privacy going to be compromised in the long run?
