This week in Google - Very interesting

Post by DAE_JA_VOO »

So, I'm not much of a fan of Podcasts, but I stumbled across this one and it's really good. I downloaded it and listened to it in my car the morning. It's absolutely packed with info about the current events taking place regarding Google. It's a 25MB file, and well worth the bandwidth. Here are this weeks topics:

* Media Talk USA with Jeff Jarvis
* City university of New York Graduate School of Journalism
* Apple Blocks Official Google Voice App, Pulls GV Mobile from App Store
* How (and why) to replace the AP
* The John Henry fight of man v. algorithm
* Gina: Gmail Adds Custom SMTP Servers, Drops “On Behalf Of”
* Google asks, "Do you really want to drunk e-mail?"
* Gmail offline
* New in Labs: Canned Responses
* Microsoft Office 2010 Starts Ascension to the Cloud
* Google Wave still in its experimental stage
* Google Wave Developer Preview at Google I/O 2009
* The Pushbutton Web: Realtime Becomes Real
* pubsubhubbub
* Twitter clients could help with backup
* Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable

I found it incredibly informative, and it was most certainly food for thought, especially the discussion about Google Wave.

Give it a listen :)

Social networking with Google reader

Post by jee »

hmm, cannot find the other Google thread...

Social networking is the buzz - and the Google reader's (discussed elsewhere on the forum) new features add to the sharing.
Google Reader, a Google service that pulls content from all your favorite news sites and blog into one place, has announced two new features for receiving and sharing information that’ll make it far more social.
The first lets you add friends’ feeds to Google Reader, provided those friends are using a Google Profile.
When you see content you like in Reader, clicking the “Send to” tab lets you check off multiple content-sharing sites — such as Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Delicious — and beam a submission to all of them at once. So you no longer have to click through to the story and manually add it to each site.

I enjoy listening to Podcasts while I sit in traffic to and from work each day, really helps pass the time.

The main ones I listen to are Windows Weekly with Paul Thurrott (Winsupersite) and The Tech Guy with Leo Leporte. Will try TWIG as it sounds really interesting as well...

I'm sure you'll like it Ryan :) I listen to Windows Weekly and The Tech Guy as well. The Tech guy feels a little bit "Novice" for me sometimes though, but i still enjoy it.

If you haven't listened to the new episode of Windows Weekly, you should do so. Leo and Paul have a big discussion about the ability to use upgrade versions of Win 7.

Yup, I just uploaded that episode to my iPhone so will be listening to it on the way home today... This morning I listened to episode 127, which was highly entertaining, especially the description of the hotel Paul was staying at.

Yeah dude, TWIG is an amazing Podcast. It's not really Google specific, to be honest. It's got loads of stuff about Google, but it's also very heavily based on Cloud Computing, which I'm incredibly interested in.

Haha, in the latest Windows Weekly, Paul sums up my feelings about Google and the whole China debacle. I too am growing tired of Google and their self righteous attitude now...

Google announced today that it is extending its SSL offerings to Google search.
As Google notes in its blog post, SSL support is still in beta — hence the new logo. Also, while Google will be encrypting your connection, it will still maintain the same search data that it always maintains. In other words, don’t think that SSL support means you can keep Google from retaining info about your searches.

Additionally, Google’s SSL support is only for basic search for now. Image Search and Maps, for instance, don’t support SSL yet. Also keep in mind that if you click on an unsupported service, like Images, you could be taken out of SSL mode.
http://mashable.com/2010/05/21/google-search-ssl/

ps Ryan - i agree with you - Google is set to take over the world....

Well, that's the general syntax for a URL, but I don't know if that's what your app expects or not...
