Windows 7 less Secure than Vista......Good or bad?

Post by Ryan_Cooper »

While Microsoft officials won’t say it (at least not publicly), one of Windos 7’s main selling points is likely to be that it’s the “anti-Vista.” It will be faster, smaller, more reliable and… less secure?

If Microsoft continues on its current path regarding one of Windows 7’s components — the User Account Control (UAC) feature — the company might find itself in the regrettable place where Windows 7 could be less secure than Vista, according to some testers.

Two Windows enthusiast bloggers, Long Zheng and Rafael Rivera, have now discovered not one, but two, seemingly severe exploit channels in the UAC setting that is currently set as the default for Windows 7. The first exploit they publicized (after talking to Microsoft privately about it) allows malware to turn off UAC; the other allows malware to auto-elevate without notifying the user. To date, Microsoft’s response is that the new UAC default is set the way it is “by design” and isn’t problematic.
Some one pointed this out to me and it doesnt really bother me but it might bother others. have a look at the full article and give your views on this subject

Oh my word.

1) it's a beta so big holes are a dime a dozen
2) Linux isn't like Vista (and this is what Win7 is trying to emulate) and look at it's security levels.
3) Give them time to write the final code, I'm sure it will be bril.
Soon Google will know everything...including how to divide by zero :(

I can't say I've ever understood what the big fuss about UAC is. I've never turned it off, and it's never bothered me. :?

I also turned off my UAC, but then my gadgets stopped working. I read on the net, the UAC needs to be turned on, at least on the lowest level of on. Then my gadgets worked again after a reboot.

Any similar experiences?

Seriously, maybe it's just me that installs and uses control panel apps a lot etc. But doesn't that popup to click continue irritate you?

Not really - I don't do a lot of installing or mucking around in the control panel, so it doesn't bother me that much. Also, when something tries to make a global change to my system, I know about it.

I do see your point though, given your circumstances.

nah, between UAC and a 3rd party app like spybot S&D, I choose spybot because it doesn't interrupt my flow. it pops up and I can choose to ignore it or click it at my own leisurely time. Until MS integrates that option. I'll leave it off.
