Vista SP2 Beta launched

Post by Frozenfireside »

No one really noticed (maybe SP1 was all we really needed) buuut the SP2 Beta was lauched on the 4th or so.
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 released tomorrow (4th)

Posted at: 5:32pm 3rd December 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

Service Pack BETA will be made available to public via Microsoft’s Customer Preview Program
Windows Vista Service Pack 2

After dishing out a few copies of the BETA of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 to select customers in October, Microsoft has now decided to let the general public get their hands on the BETA of the service pack, starting from tomorrow.

On The Windows Blog Microsoft’s corporate vice president, Mike Nash, revealed that the BETA of Service Pack 2 will be made available through Microsoft’s Customer Preview Program (CPP) via Technet from 4 December. Nash explained that the CPP ‘is intended for technology enthusiasts, developers, and IT Pros who would like to test Service Pack 2 in their environments and with their applications prior to final release.’

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 will include all of the updates since Service Pack 1 was released in March, and it will also contain a few other features. Most notably, Microsoft claims that it ‘improves performance for Wi-Fi connection after resuming from sleep mode,’ which will be good news to anyone who’s suffered the frustration of a dropped WiFi connection after resuming from Sleep mode. The pack also adds ID and vendor strings for VIA’s 64-bit Nano CPU, and the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack.

As well as this, Microsoft says that SP2 will add support for the exFAT file system for large flash memory devices, and that the RSS gadget in the Windows Sidebar will be more responsive. You can find more detail on the improvements in Service Pack 2 at the Notable Changes document here.

Will you be updating to the BETA of Windows Vista Service Pack 2, or are you going to wait for the official release? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Lets wait for the final version though.

They are 2 different OSes and about 7 years apart!!! They will never behave the same. This arguement has raged for ages, and the point has been restated more or less identically with each new OS! And in fact, I think Vista is better for gaming. (barring the few games that don't run in vista ) IMHO anyway.

Now back on topic.

I had to re-install lately and I could not find my Vista CDs umongst all of the muck so I installed XP. Now I find myself hating XP for some or other odd reason.

Just to add 1 or 2 more features of SP2:
* Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.
* Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology.
* Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista.
* Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.
* Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones.

It already does ! Infact some games run better in vista . Open your eyes man . Vista is only slower than xp when running dx10 and thats becuase xp does not have dx10.

I'm not over the moon about these add ons.
Pretty much useless to me.

Have it your way. This is however propably only the things you will be able to see. There will be tons of stuff in the background which the sp fixes and you will never find out about it.

Oh don't get me wrong, I know a SP can add a lot of system stability to the mix, take SP1 for Vista for example, but those add ons are completely useless to me.

I absolutely LOVE Windows Search. Using a PC without it makes me want to pull my hair out. It's the best thing since GMail.

Windows search added 60secs to the boot time of a pentium 4 PC when PCformat tested.

Trust me, find an alternative. There is one as effective but without the boot issue.
