Please explain in simple language the steps to get wvdial in Ubuntu 7.10. I don't understand what to do.

Like for example. Start off as

sudo etc/..../
the password is given
then what is next?

Please explain. when you just say type wvdial in the terminal a wrong command comes up.

Thanks,
Jim

If he works for either he is beyond help. And he does have the right attitude/maturity to work at either :wink:

CMD is command line. That answers that question

SO.... you type in sudo wvdial, and there all the steps right there. There are no other commands to type in whatsoever

Once you have the connection created, you will probably have to edit the wvdial.conf file for SA's ISP's

All I got was this:
jhmac77@jhmac77-desktop:~$ sudo wvdial
[sudo] password for jhmac77:
WvDial<*1>: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
WvDial<Err>: Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
WvDial<Err>: Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
WvDial<Err>: Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
jhmac77@jhmac77-desktop:~$

I am trying to install a US Robotics 56 K Fax Win modem into Ubuntu 7.10. It is already installed in Windows XP on the same hard drive as Ubuntu.

OK, you going to need to configure it through the wvdial.conf file
It looks like this

Code: Select all

[Dialer hsdpa]
Phone = *99***16#
Username = vodafone
Password = vodafone
Stupid Mode = 1
Dial Command = ATDT
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init2 = ATZ
Init3 = ATE0V1&D2&C1S0=0+IFC=2,2
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet";
You are going to have to input the specific details for your type of modem, ISP etc
The should be here: /etc/wvdial.conf

Run - sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf to edit it

Don't be lazy.

You'll find that people are much more willing to give you an answer if you're prepared to put some effort yourself. A question such as "Would someone provide a pointer?" is far more likely to be answered than "Please post the exact procedure that I must use", because you're making it clear that you can complete the process if we point you in the right direction.

I suggest reading this guide before asking your next question.

I'm not too sure about this, but I read somewhere that 56k pci modems aren't really full modems and they rely on Windows to send some of the work to the cpu to process... and that there's no support for that in Linux? Do you know anything about that?

Did he say its for a 56k modem? If so, good luck with that... PCI modems have been giving endless issues in Linux

Ya, The Linux book i have, which is based on Suse which is one of the most widely supported distro's, pretty much says that if you are using a PCI modem in linux, you're name is Ben Dover. :twisted:

well not really but what it says is that there is alomst no driver support :roll:
