Linux Religion

Post by shaunbridgens »

i have been trying linux for a few weeks now. It's stable and ver secure but lack multi media and gaming. The closest OS with the linux range i have come to explore that can actually run some windows Apps and Games is XANDROS. It's not free yet but like LINDOWS has a very nice price tag to it....99$.
go to www.xandros.com for more in. A local SA distributor sells it for just over R900. www.ataglance.co.za
Hope this helps

You don't need to pay anything to get a decent, stable and secure Linux system.

There are numerous distributions totally free for download.

All Xandros does is "dumb down' Linux a bit.

You have to understand that Linux is infinately customisable, so different distributions do things differently.

My advise, before you go and splash out on money for Linux :-

1. What do you want to use it for ?

If the answer is gaming, then don't bother.
If you just want to meddle, go for it and have fun

2. How much spare time do you have ?

Linux can take some getting used to and some hardware can be difficult to setup.

3. Do you like to meddle with terminal (command prompt) stuff ?

Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty and get under the hood of the OS.

I would recommened Linux as it stands now as :-

1. A server - any type of server, mail, www, DNS etc.
2. An office Desktop - word processing, email etc.
3. Video and Sound - while not as speedy as windows, there's tons of choices for playing music and video
4. Surfing the web

The distributions I would recommend :-

1. Beginner - Mandrake 9.2 - get the live bootable CD to see if you like it first.
Mandrake comes with full multimedia support "out of the box"

2. Beginner for office use - Redhat 9.0
Full office machine, solid but very little multimedia support

3. Beginner to Intermediate - SuSe 9.0

4. Intermediate computer user - Slackware 9.1

If you've never used Linux before, do yourself a favour and download a 'live' distribution - this will allow you to boot into and use Linux without installing it on your PC.

I play most of my games under linux, either with the linux package (ut2003 ut2004, quake3, neverwinter nights, etc) or through winex (a windows emulator with directX support)

what other multimedia would you like.
Xine = dvd player (with up to 7 channel audio support), mpeg, avi, etc
xmms = like winamp

there is also a lot of dj-mixing programs for linux. one thing linux isnt lacking in is multimedia.

Lindows = Wannabe linux.
