ADSL Internet
OK, so I take it nobody has tested this yet? Any comments, questions, answers about adsl?
ADSL Internet
Speeds are on average 40-50 KB/s for downloading and 18-25 KB/s for uploading. Unfortunately the big problem with ADSL is that you have a bandwidth cap of 3 GB a month. When you reach the cap Telkom drops the speed to something rediculous like 2 KB/s.

3 GB is not a lot of bandwidth on ADSL and at the full download speed you reach your cap within 15 hours. Currently Telkom are revising additional ADSL packages that will be released next year sometime. They will have bandwidth limitations of 6 GB and 10 GB. The only question is how much more are they going to charge for the increased caps.

It sounds like the download speeds are very good. The capping is ridicious though! It makes it less worthwhile to get ADSL. I probably download more than 3gb with my ISDN using the R7 special.
Cape Town is only getting ADSL from March, hopefully they have better options then.

Are you using a modem provided by Telkom Darkskies? I will try getitng the modem myself as they are much cheaper from abroad for exactly the same modem.

ADSL Internet
my personal opinion is that an ISDN2a connection from telkom is the best option for surfing the net often

you only get 128k bandwidth instead of ADSL´s 512k, but its not too shabby

download at around 16kbps, no cap

50 ping too

How much does the ISDN2a cost? All the costs and a nice breakdown including Telkom rental/installation/phone calls and isp costs.

I just got my ISDN2a installed and it cost me around R400 for installation. I bought a cheapie internal modem for R350. Rental is R178 for the line per month and I have the R7 special.

I also subscribed to telkomISDN internet at R109 pm.

So far I have yet to see the 128k speed but at 64k it seems to be around 7-8k download.
Imaginet, Telkom and ADSL dispute 5 November 2002
Source: Darren Miller
A dispute has arisen between Imaginet and Telkom regarding the provision of ADSL Internet access. Prior to launching its ADSL service, Imaginet verified with an authorised representative of Telkom that there would be no "cap" on traffic for Imaginet´s ADSL customers - i.e. the amount of data that could be downloaded would not be limited, and no extra charges incurred over a set limit. This fact is important to ADSL users because of the high speeds available, it would be easy to surpass the 3gb (3 gigabytes) that Telkom announced it would impose on its own subscribers.

Imaginet, in the interest of its customers and in fair marketing, would not have offered a service with a limit, so before launching the ADSL service, Imaginet confirmed with Telkom´s Special Services department (in charge of ISP services) that no cap would be enforced on Imaginet´s ADSL customers. This fact was pivotal to Imaginet´s decision to offer this new service.

Now, despite confirmation and promises to the contrary, Telkom has seen fit to ignore its commitment and broken its promise to Imaginet. Imaginet´s management was informed that there would indeed be a traffic cap placed on ADSL services it sold. No apology or explanation was forthcoming, and Telkom has yet to inform Imaginet of the details of how the traffic cap will be enforced, charged for, and how much it will cost. Imaginet was simply told that, "The cap will be effective immediately."

This has forced Imaginet into an awkward position, to say the least. Based upon Telkom´s promises, Imaginet advertised its ADSL service with no cap and no limits. And now, Imaginet is simply expected to eat its words, and suffer the consequences of Telkom´s actions. This is unacceptable, and will not be allowed to slide by unchallenged. Imaginet intends to pursue all legal means at its disposal in an attempt to hold Telkom to its word.

Unfortunately, until such time as a resolution is achieved, Imaginet will no longer offer its ADSL service to the public. To do so would be irresponsible, with so many questions yet to be answered. Existing ADSL clients will remain active until a firm resolution is achieved, or until Imaginet finds it is unable to provide the service as advertised. Should no positive resolution be forthcoming, Imaginet will be forced to withdraw its ADSL service completely, and existing customers will be given notice of termination for the service of at least thirty (30) days.

This is not the first time that Telkom has placed Imaginet in an awkward, potentially damaging position, and the same is probably true for most ISPs in South Africa.

It is many informed people´s opinion, and the opinion of the author, that until Telkom can successfully be held accountable for its actions, expected to provide a reasonable quality of service, and forced to bring its pricing structure more in line with those of other countries, the online public will continue to suffer. Until these things are accomplished, the growth and effective use of the Internet by South Africans will not reach its potential, and businesses and home users will not receive the services they deserve and at prices which they can afford.

The Internet Service Provider´s Association (ISPA) is one organisation that is making an effort to improve things in this regard. The ISPA has lodged several complaints with ICASA (telecommunications regulator) regarding several alleged anti-competitive actions by Telkom, and continually works to improve things for the "online public" of South Africa. Imaginet is proud to be a member of the ISPA, and will support them in their efforts to hold Telkom accountable.
