why can't I apply the layer mask ?

it looks like the part you want to apply the mask to, does not accept it...

what does the little image next to that layer mask look like?

ok it seems you cannot add a layer mask to a "Smart Object"...

EDIT: unless you "Rasterize" the "Smart Object" layer first...

have you done it before? why though you want to add it?

this ofc assuming that the "Smart Object" thing I am talking bout is what you did...
