Recommended CPU for 8800 GT

Post by JAM »

I am planning on upgrading my CPU. What CPU would you recommend in order to get the most from my 8800 GT.

Budget = N$ 3000.

Your views please.

Thanks

I think your motherboard might not support the new 1333fsb processors (I stand to be corrected) but if this is the case I would go for the Q6600 as it stil uses the 1066fsb.

I was considering the Core 2 Duo E6600, E6850 or Q6600, but for the Q6600 I need to upgrade my MOBO`s Bios. The PC is mostly used for gaming.

With a bios update it will support even the new E8500 processors but not the 1333 FSB. I think the max our boards (I also have a P5B :D ) is 1066. Go for the E8400 if want Dual core or the Q6600 for quad.

I have a E6600 cpu and 8800gt card and the combination works quite well. But I would rather go for a E8400 if I were you because it is newer and faster than a E6600 (Unless you want to buy mine  )

If I go for the E8400, how do I go about upgrading the BIOS (E8400 = 45 nm technology, and the MOBO requires BIOS update to work with 45 nm technology) :?:

But the E8x00 and E6x50 series are 1333fsb.

I gave a Q6600 and I must say it's an awesome chip.

PS Have anyone noticed the cpu usege of NFS Prostreet. Two cores are at about 90% and the other two at about 50%. That's 70% usage, way more than Crysis!!!

Download the latest BIOS (I think its 1803), copy it to your flash drive - obviously after you have extracted the zip file - , restart and enter the BIOS and finally update your bios. Should be as easy as that. I did it a while ago and I had absolutely no hassles. Just DO NOT SWITCH THE POWER OFF WHILE ITS UPDATING.

Does this BIOS make 1333fsb on that baord possible?

If not then he can't the E8400.

Id rather wait for the Q9450 instead of getting a Q6600 ;)
It will be MUCH faster. Also how much is N$ 3000 in South African Rands? :P

That should be about enough for a Q9450 :D

Thanks guys for the help so far.

The Q9450 runs at 1333 MHZ, while my MOBO only supports 1066 MHZ.

So I think the Q6600 is the most appropriate.

PS: Where would I find the Q9450 for R 3000 anyway?

Well the E8xxx also run @ 1333Mhz dont they? :?

The Q9450 would give you a nice performance increase over the Q6600 as well ;)

Also Andy should be able to get it at approximatly R3000
