Good Media Player for Ubuntu/Linux

Post by Liet_Kynes »

Hey guys. I'd like a recommendation on a media player to get on an ubuntu system for avi's dvd's etc.

There is a default one that works ok I guess, but I'm looking for something similar to media player classic on windows. Mostly for the ability to freely resize the picture size in full screen mode. Do you guys know of one that does this?

Totem is VERY similar to media player classic. Give it a go :D

Or VLC, that's a great one too

...I have just installed the "bad" and the "ugly" Gstream plugins (the "good" was already installed) and I am able to watch basically all video file formats in Totem (which is the default player on Ubuntu... well 7.10 in any case)... I then installed gxine and I use that to be able to watch Real media files (the one type I found Totem didn't want to...)...

Now I must just get DVD playback working :?

Thx... finally stumbled on the following list of goodies needed to get DVD happiness 5 minutes ago: "libdvdcs2 libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 vlc" (might skip VLC though as I already have gxine and totem...)

It lacks the ability to freely resize the video in fullscreen though. Also another feature I like im MPC is the abiltiy to shutdown the pc after playback.

I use VLC for video. I've never looked back

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install vlc
