Funtional Eye-Candy with Avant Window Navigator
I've been asked a few times about the dock i have on my desktop:
Personally, i've struggled countless times to get this set up, and tonight after i did a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.10, i knew that i wanted the dock again, but i wasn't looking forward to going through all the trouble of getting it set up. So after some searching i found the .deb files available for download, which is perfect! This is as easy as double clicking two files
So download Avant Window Navigator, and libawn-bzr (the only dependency it needed when i installed). I've hosted these on my site to make sure i never lose them, but i found them here.
All you need to do now is double click them and then run AWN, easy as that!
I seriously can't live without AWN.
Enjoy

Okay, so I googled to try and find out why this didn't work for me... turns out to be a very blonde error, all I needed to do was enable updates
I know some other forum members were having the same problem, now you know how to fix it
Now Dae, you're using yours as a dock rather than a window manager... how did you get it set up like that?

I don't know about kubuntu, but ubuntu 7.10 comes with Compiz Fusion, a fusion of beryl and compiz. That's all you need for AWN, that's what Dae is using.

I find gnome a lot easier to use than KDE. When I used to experiment with Linux a couple of years ago I prefered KDE, that was probably because it was big and shiny which kept me occupied while playing around in the GUI. Lately while I have been using Linux seriously as an OS, I found that gnome is a lot easier to use and much quicker. I found that the Ubuntu Human theme was a bit much for me and it took too long to find a nice theme and apply it and what not. So I found Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu but comes precompiled with a nice theme, audio and visual codecs and a whole lot of other stuff.SBSP wrote:Screw Kubunto
I'm downloading Ubunto
I guess what I'm trying to say is have a look at Linux Mint before changing to Ubuntu. I found that Ubuntu's theme was a bit daunting and almost scared me away from Linux forever.

SBSP, it's Ubuntu
Ubunto is awesome.
Very neat gnome is much better than KDE, allot cleaner and simpler.
It was a matter of installing it once up and running , from the command init 1 then run nvidia setup then init 3 and everything was working.
Got the whole wobbely effects i thought i need to install XGL go get that working.
I unfortuantly couldnt install that navigator thing, my libs are old and avan needs newer ones.

Suse has nevar crashed on me.
For one, I like teh new panel, I can run either Gnome (blegh) or KDE, I don't need two different discs. Suse's build service is teh bomb. Yast makes configuring stuff simple. Some of Suse's features were copied by Ubuntu. Most of Suse has packages that are one click installs from the website, just click the ypm file and it does the rest. For instance, if I had internet at home I could install Compiz-Fusion just by clicking one file.
EDIT: And Suse is of course not gay like Ubuntu.

You should come get some fresh air here in Middelburg, Gauteng is making you dyslexic or something.
While you're here I can give you a Suse install disc.

H-Man the only reason why SUSE seems better is because is has been around for longer than Ubuntu. Yes, Ubuntu may have stolen ideas from SUSE but SUSE stole those ideas from some other distro way back. Linux isn't meant to be a fight about which is the better distro, its meant to be a unification of the users who can't afford (or in my case don't like) Macs and who absolutely despise Microsoft and their money making schemes.
