Ever wondered what an Xbox360 looks like inside? Looky!
I've seen images all over the net, but seeing it in real life is just so much better. So, here's a dead one i picked up:
The "0102" you see there is the specific problem it has. That's basically the Xbox telling me "Look bru, i'm broken. I don't know exactly why, and if it was the DVD drive or something, i would be able to tell you, but in this case, i don't know what's wrong with me".
Faceplate off:
Side pieces off:
Bottom cover off:
Top cover off:
That's basically the 360 in it's chassis.
DVD drive and fan vent out:
Motherboard out of the chassis:
This is Microsoft's big mistake:
These X-clamps put SO much pressure on the board that over time they can actually cause a lot of damage. Sorry MS. You. Fail.
Coolers off:
I'm gonna get some Isopropryl Alcohol now and then i'm gonna try and fix this console buy replacing the stupid x-clamps with regular screws. That seems to do the trick for most people who have the RROD.
Anyway, just thought you might like to see the insides of the world's best console

Ridiculous hey?! The chips are PASSIVELY cooled, with the two rear fans pulling the warm air away (at least there's that vent).I34z1k wrote: Is there no fan on the sinks themselves?
The team who designed the cooling in this thing deserves a back-hand.
The newer 360s like mine or yours do have better cooling though (but still not an active cooling solution.

Yeah, the cooler on the left (that's the GPU's heatsink) is a bummer. There's no way we can cool it properly (unless by water - coming soon to a modding forum near you ).
I got the 360 from PH. I got two of em. Gonna try and fix 'em both. Once i've modded one of them, i'll do a big mod on my own one, water and all. I'll use that one for gaming and i'll use the others as Media Centers. One in my room, one in the living room (assuming i get them both working).

I thought they were the normal, not 360s. Well if one doesn't work at all, I'll buy it off ya, I wanna try some things. Like painting it

Exactly. I first wanna see how i should work with the 360 and it's hardware before i do it on my own personal console. That's why having these ones is a bonus.
What's also great is that i can do all the modding i want on one of THESE cases, and while that's going on, i can still use my own 360 like normal. Once i'm finished modding, i can just move my 360 into the modded case

PH? Nope. There were 3 when i got there. Paul gave me one (the one i ordered) and i reminded him of the countless emails i sent him about wanting as many as i could get. He then told me that he had another 2. I was about to take them both and then i remembered that maxxis also ordered one, so i left that one. (damn you maxxis )
So no, there's no more...

Guys.... Here's an update for you...
Here's the thermal paste that MS used:
I used some Isopropyl Alcohol to remove it:
I only removed what was on the physical dies though. The paste that was around the dies was hard and i would need to scratch it off with something hard, and i didn't wanna risk damaging the console. Doing it this way is perfect though because it's only the die that matters.
This is what will save the day. About R10 worth of screws and washers:
I had to do some modding to the chassis to accommodate these new screws though. Nothing a drill press and a 13mm drill bit can't fix:
I shortened 4 of the screws:
These are the ones that will hold the GPU heatsink. The CPU heatsink isn't under anything so i just left the screws.
Now comes the complicated part. I put some AS5 on the Cores and then fitted the heatsinks with my new screws. I didn't screw the heatsinks down TIGHT though, just enough for them to be fixed. What i did then was boot the 360, but WITHOUT the fans connected. It obviously gave me the 3RLOD (3 red lights of death), and after about a minute, it gave me the "Overheating" error. From that moment on, i let it run for 2 minutes, overheating. This allows the solder problems to fix themselves by getting hot enough to re-solder themselves in place.
After that, i turned off the 360, quickly FASTENED the coolers (tight this time) and then left the 360 to cool off for about 20 minutes.
I then placed the board back in the chassis:
Added the fan duct and the DVD-ROM:
SUCCESS!!!!
Here my console is running Call Of Duty 4:
All i need to do now is refit the covers.
Wow that was easy... oh my word...

Dude, that thermal paste (could you even call it paste?) looks seriously dodge.
