Which Anti Virus Software?

Post by Madgic »

I have just left an ISP who provided Anti Virus protection. Now I don´t know which Anti Virus to use. I used to use Norton but found it caused too many crashes and dowloading updates took hours. Any suggestions? I´m feeling rather vulnerable!

Listen Up:
Norton 2003 is the best. It provides the best protection and is very easy to use. It doesn´t slow your system down like others, neither does the Firewall. McAfee is the biggest $hit. I had to reinstall my whole Browser before anything started working again, exept for the Firewall, it still didn´t work... McAfee AntiVirus is quite good, the Updates are fast, but just go to www.symantec.com, there you can download an "intelligent updater". It´s much faster getting your downloads like that.
Oh, and I never had a Systemcrash with Norton, but f....in McAfee....

Hi Danmirra is correct NAV is one of the Top packages around.

I currently use 3 diffrent packages for my customers:
F-Secure, Norton Antivirus and PC-Cillin.
Out of these 2 I would reccomend either PC-Cillin or Norton.
Both these products work the same and have the same features the only major differnece between the 2 is that the Norton download files are quite big (3-5 mb on exach download), whereas PC-Cillin the file is only big on your first download (around 3 mb) after that the file is under 500K.

But before you make a choise on purchasing either you need to make sure you are protecting yourself completely.
Allot of ISP´s guarantee that you won´t get a virus by connecting to them this is absolute bull *****, and can be only true for e-mail.
Viruses like Opaserv attack you direclty through your modem and bypasses the ISP totally.
If you are connected to the internet constantly you need firewall software to protect you agains viruses and hackers.
For this I roccommend Sygate personal firewall or my favorite Norton Firewall.

Norton currently has a package that incorporates both the firewall and antivirus it is called Norton Intenret Security.
I recommend purchasing this.
Contact me on pricing:
marius@biteit.co.za

I can provide far more competitive pricing than Incredible Corruption.

Hi Bite! Thanks for the input. Although I still have my old Norton software I am loathe to get an update unless I can be guaranteed I won´t have constant crashes, lock-ups etc. BUT I´m feeling kinda ´naked´ at the moment. I´ll be in touch for some advice. Thanks

I agree Norton AV is the best around. Never had any problems with it until it wouldnt get the updates and crashed my system when I tried to force it.

No biggie though, I just did the PC over and no more problems.

I´m currently using AVG (a free download with update +_ 900KB).

I´ve had no probs and also not viruses detected - so I don´t know how good it really is. Most users in the UK seems to like it a lot and seem to have an advertion to NAV.

Using ZoneAlarm - very good and its free.

Hey guys! I should´ve been back some time ago to let you know that I´m sorted - Thanks for all the info though!

In the process I learnt a Big Lesson: Never let it be known you have no protection!!!!!

While I was using another forum I got hacked, cracked, whatever you want to call it, several times. The bastards caused me a lot of downtime and loss of income. So if you haven´t got protection of any kind - Don´t Put The Word Out! There are some nasty people out there! Just ask for an opinion.

But there are Nice Guys like you lot around and that´s what makes the world a Good Place! Hope you all have a Great New Year!

Sorry WebFace, I have´t been back here for simply ages.

I´m sure that you have obtained ZoneAlarm by now. Just happened to test my system at www.symantec.com while running ZoneAlarm today and was rather unimpressed to find a few unsecure ports. NAV seems to be pretty good, but I am tired of coughing up money for everything.

Have been using AVAST antivirus for a while now. I find that it slows my PC down to some extent. The daily updates are quick (incremental) - caught one virus after installation.

Feedback on AVAST would be appreciated.

I´ve been using Nod 32 for a while, damn fast and it found viruses and stuff that norton 2003 didn´t.

Norton slowed my pc, caused crashes, just not as good since they joined symantec.

Try nod 32, fast, reliable, no crashes, background checks.

Im happy with AVG. It´s cleared out all the viruses i´ve had. I dunno about norton. It also caused my machine to run slow and crash a couple times. But AVG´s also free as longnose said, so thats an added bonus

I´ve never had a crash with Norton, and it uses 15Mb of memory in the background, so I´m not sure why anyone says it´s slow - it never has been for me. Perhaps I´ve just been lucky.

NOD isn´t bad, though.

2003:Norton AV + Firewall + Systemworks + Gost

>GOST:Buy another disk and copy your current disk entirely over. Now go and disconnect the current disk, and start working from this new one. You have now a proven working copy, and not just a "backup" that one day may, or may not work. Not everybody may agree with this. Weigh up your effort against the price of a HDD. I have no fear if my PC get stumped now!

>Cleanup after every visit with PopUp & Privacy Defender as well as with Norton Cleansweep.

>>Whatch your Norton Firewall log, and block all unnecessary connections that spread out of visiting a single site.

>>Update Windows regularly...[Tune that IE Firewall too]

>>Google has a lot of IP addresses, so you have to block all.

I was actually considering making this a sticky, to stop any future "What anti-virus do I use" threads. Unfortunately, you guys are spamming this to death, so it gets locked instead.
