AMD Athlon AM2 3200+ Overclock Help

Post by Papsnoek »

Hi,

My Intel board went puff when I installed my new water cooling setup (Which is quite serious!) and now I'm running a friends AMD mobo and CPU.

I have been able to get the Cpu up to 2.7Ghz on a voltage of 1.45v roughly. But the minute I go above that mark, it doesn't work. Either hangs at bios or at windows startup.

Mobo: ASUS M2R32-MVP
CPU: AMD Athlon AM2 3200+
RAM: Corsair TwinX

I have tried different setups. I.E:

FSB:300Mhz
HTT:900Mhz
CPU Multiplier: 9x WORKS FINE
CPU:2.7Ghz
RAM:375Mhz roughly

And

FSB:270Mhz
HTT:1080Mhz
CPU Multiplier: 10x WORKS FINE
CPU:2.7Ghz
RAM:375Mhz roughly

With 8x Multiplier the RAM battles. Is it bad for the FSB to go from 200Mhz to over 300Mhz? And is it the CPU limiting the 2.7Ghz Mark?

Thanks!

Getting to 2.7ghz on a 3200+ is pretty hectic... I'm guessing you might've reached it's limit, because my 3700+ found it's at 3.1ghz

Drop your HTT Divider to 2. And is the RAM 375MHz or DDR375? Cause there is a huge diffirence between them ;)

I'm not sure which is which. The RAM is 375Mhz, DDR750. If that is right.

Won't dropping the HTT Divider to 2 slow my performance?

But the HTT speed is rated max at 1000Mhz and it is only 900Mhz.

AMD is so complicated to overclock! On an Intel you just change the FSB!!!

Yes, This is AM2, Does that change anything?

Is it bad for the FSB to be set very high?

Yeah, the HTT on AM2 is much higher, that's why Wik wanted you to drop it, but since it's AM2 you don't have to. (I think?). Also, AM2 has DDR2, which lets you use DDR800, unlike the DDR400 of 939.

Well, no, as long as your mobo can handle it. In theory a CPU running at 10x 280 FSB should be faster than a CPU doing 2.8ghz with a higher multi and lower FSB, s\because all the components benefit from a faster FSB, not just the CPU.

Maybe download Clockgen, and then set the 2.7GHz in the Bios, boot into Windows and see if you can do anything more with Clockgen?

Dude, respect for getting it to 2.7! I can get mine to 2.5 max (sometimes, when the board is feeling nice), but my HT still goes fubared, no matter which way I tweak.

Anyways, think its more a limitation of the chip, exactly what happens to me if I even try set it 1mhz above the 2.5 mark. thats probably the max my chip can go. Sounds like the limit for your, but try various utilities before giving up! Thats still a respectable clock!
