VGA watercoolers is Pricey very Pricey...I am considering aircooling with say a bigger fan and some VGA expansion fan slots...
The ThermalRight HR-03 is a aluminium
and the Zalman VF1000 LED is all copper...
The Zalman would be cooler right?

CPU coolers actually work very well on GPUs. They're just very impractical.KillerByte wrote:VR-Zone is the noobness - stock intel cooler. tisk tisk

Ya I'm afraid without water or some other cooling method (other than air) this project isn't going to be all that exciting
I am 63% addicted to Counterstrike. What about you?
Wow that you would even think of something this extreme deserves a big round of applause... That's some serious clocking there. If you do pull it off you'll know you were the first locally so that's something to celebrate. Not practical for 24/7 operation though a cooler than size in a tower case would snap the card in half. Maybe water is easier, probably cooler too

I would aslo think the Zalman would be better as it is fully copper including the fins. However the Thermalright is copper at the base only and has nickel plated aluminium fins, its the design of the heatsink that makes it so efficient.
Zalman is tops no doubt, but the Thermalright is currently the best thing on the market for now...
Aluminum radiates heat away faster and more efficiently than copper, but copper conducts heat better, thats why some of the best coolers have copper cores and aluminum fins.
Hmm, if you can get your mounting points right and do some serious modding, then an option is to possibly use a TEC/fan combo CPU cooler to cool the gpu and possibly ram as well. You will need a way, most likely rods, to secure the cooling unit to the case itself. I have never seen it mounted on a graphics card, but have seen a mod where the guy suspends thing in his case with rods, and it looks super-sexy. I think it was project nightfire or something, can't remember the site.
Depends what your budget is. I hazard the opinion that even vga aircoolers or even pci slot coolers won't help much. too much heat to deal with.
Good luck in modding your card, maybe rivatuner and other goodies can help you!

OK I WILL BUY WATERCOOLING...ITS GONNA TAKE ME A WHILE THEN cause it so dam EXpensive....have to save R1500 for a watercooler...
If U guys can get it for cheaper...let me know

IMO, you'll get similar cooling with high end air. If you're gonna go water, do it properly with a proper radiator, pump and block. Will cost a lot more than R1.5k
24/7 @ 1ghz is very unrealistic. That card won't last long and you'll void the warranty as soon as you do the voltmod. You'll probably get a run or two in 3dmark, but not much more than that.

I agree with Hex...water will cost you more than R1500, unless you get lucky or know people.Bloodmonk wrote:OK I WILL BUY WATERCOOLING...ITS GONNA TAKE ME A WHILE THEN cause it so dam EXpensive....have to save R1500 for a watercooler...

Decent GPU cooler = R500 (Swiftech MCW60) + RAM sinks
Decent 2x120mm Radiator + 2x120mm Fans = R800
Decent pump = R800
Then you'll still need tubing, clamps, etc
What you could do is buy a Swiftech Apex Ultra+ and sell me the CPU block for R500...that will set you back R2000 (after I buy the cpu cooler from you)
and you'll have a nice kit :):)
If you're looking to only just get 1ghz do 1 or 2 benches and then throttle back, ghetto air cooling with 60dB fans and no case is the way to go. And won't be so heavy on your pocket. If you plan to voltmod and keep the card voltmodded with a high clock, you need water.

Well I thought I'd revive this thread since Bloodmonk and I made a deal so he has the makings of a semi decent WC kit on the way to him right now.
Triple 120mm Crossflow radiator sans fans
Hydor L30 pump
DD Maze4 GPU Block
Swiftech Microres
Tubing, plumbers tape, barbs etc
Also a Koolance CPU-300-V10 for if/when he decides to add his CPU into the loop
It's not the greatest kit in the world but for cooling just the GPU, I reckon the triple rad, and Hydor L30 and Maze4 will provide enough cooling goodness for benching.
Looking forward to seeing some progress here

This is actually a bad time of year, but if he cancels the rad out, and replaces it with a bucket of ice, mount the setup in a normal PC case and insulate the back of the card he should have even better results, IMO, but this is better for winter as the temperature delta is smaller thus less condensation.viceroy wrote:Well I thought I'd revive this thread since Bloodmonk and I made a deal so he has the makings of a semi decent WC kit on the way to him right now.

If he can keep condensation under control then why not just do what Doobs did and dump the pump in a bucket of ice water, and keep the loop as is.WiK1d wrote:This is actually a bad time of year, but if he cancels the rad out, and replaces it with a bucket of ice, mount the setup in a normal PC case and insulate the back of the card he should have even better results, IMO, but this is better for winter as the temperature delta is smaller thus less condensation.viceroy wrote:Well I thought I'd revive this thread since Bloodmonk and I made a deal so he has the makings of a semi decent WC kit on the way to him right now.

Hey guys.....I will resume the project as soon as the WC is up....I will not OC directly to 1Gz but will do it in small amounts...to check if the temp is to hot...the guys did it with the modded aircooling...but they dont say how long the GFX card was running....
they got 34c idle with there aircooling ....my stock cooler gives 45c
maybe it wont run that hot....maybe it will....
