OC Question

Post by muffinman »

Hi Guys,

Last night I started to OC my gfx card (Radeon 9600 pro), i was able to push the core and memory to 475mhz and it ran stable. When i pushed it to 480mhz i started getting some artifacts. If i stick an aftermarket cooler on the card will i be able to push it to the 480mhz mark without getting artifacts or is 480mhz just out of bounds?

Lol. You seem similar to me. I'm never happy with an uneven number.

I don't think the extra 5mhz will make too much of a difference but I do think that an after market cooler will help you achieving that extra bit.

I think the Zalman VF700 Cu is a good choice. Had one on my 7950GT and worked a treat.

that's the strange thing.. i used aquamark 3 to check the fps and at stock the lowest fps i got was about 6.7 so i started tweaking and at 475 at that same point i got about 8fps if i remember correctly and at 480 i started getting artifactes (like i said earlier) but i decided to let it run as the slowest point in the test was in the beginning and on 480 i got 11.2fps..

In that case stick a cooler on and clock the hell out of it. Lol.

I think that the reason you might be getting that extra bit of fps is because of the artifacting.
This may not make sense, but with the artifacting that I'm come across, all the polygons go hay-wire, and now because of this, there is technically less polygons to render, hence the increase in fps.

Could be complete bollocks, but once again, it's just a though of mine.

DarkStar, your reason sounds logical to me, but then again I don't know that much either

Thanks for your input!

So I discarded vtuner2 and used atitool.

The Card Gigabyte Radeon 9600 pro 128 bit, 256 mb ram

Standard core 398mhz and standard memory 202mhz

Oc'ed to 502mhz and 235mhz. I used aquamark 3 to bench. On oc'ed values I received a total of 12 fps increase on the average fps! it makes a huge difference!!
