Good read but the reality of this is that the mentioned salaries are but a dream for most people in the industry.

How about a poll?

We were just discussing this at work.

Where do they get their "respondents" from we wondered...
What companies do they work for, and why do they get so much?

Well not every one in IT is a dumbass techie. Most Software developers earn in the reqeons of R30 000, systems analsits even more. depends on what you do. I have also seen some people advertising It Call centre jobs for R2500 p/m. so it differs. On another site I got an average of R10 000. It also depends on who they talk to.

wow, and now u are earning 12k annually? whats the point of the post?
Besides proper helpdesk staff should actually have a fairly broad and decent knowledge base, i have phoned help desk with problems and get a blank huh......um......let me refer u to...... frikkin useless

Honestly i think IT salaries are bloated... As a general most of the IT guys we deal with are complete idiots, who get paid a fortune but actually are useless with anything outside their "box". Ask them to come up with a new concept and they are screwed. I thought studying engineering would be the way to go, but we dont get paid near what the IT guys get.. (hence my current change of profession). This is a generalization ppl. so plz dont get offended if u r one of the few who can actually do ur job and a bit more.

*yeah i made spelling mistake*

and no im at 12K monthly...
I agree fully on the knowledge base as i also have phoned service desks and then the person doesnt know anything!
We get tested without us even knowing when over the phone and then we get feedback accroding to test if we know what is needed to know.

I think the best way is to do it all on your own. You do the work and the company get paid.

I worked for Panasonic as techie. We really worked our asses of for nothing. I left the company and I am now doing my own thing. There are days when I get R4000 in one day! Yes there are days when I dont get a cent. But the hours are a whole lot better and you determine your salary. If you are so unhappy where you are, why stay there. Before you open your eyes you get a 20 year award and still poor.

IT people can get good money but not when working for a boss
