Loose-lipped wisecrackers beware: keep crude comments out of the office, because your co-workers are listening. One in three employees reported hearing sexually inappropriate remarks in the workplace last year, according to a recent survey.
Improper sexual comments were the most frequent type of ridicule reported, followed by ethnic and racial slurs, remarks based on age, sexual orientation and disability. Men were twice as likely as women to hear all types of workplace disparagement, said Tom McKinnon of Novations Group, the consulting firm that conducted the national telephone survey.
People feel more comfortable making inappropriate remarks among their peers, such as men to other men, he said.
"It's written off as boys will be boys," McKinnon said. "It's not about the intent of the comment, it's about how it's perceived by other folks."
ZOMG! Thats exactly how it is where I work.
Lewd comments, questions of sexual orientation, ageist remarks and racial slurs. You will hear all that and more everyday in my department. It's actually one of the reasons I enjoy my job.
I'm actually being serious. Everyone in my dept is in on this, and we all have a go at each other. No sacred cows either. We pick on everything - your age, race religion, clothes - all of it. It's brilliant
What about where you guys work (or study) Are you colleagues cool enough to take jokes of this nature
Haha, we also rip each other off all the time and there's constant swearing and sexual remarks all day long in my office, aaah good times! I wouldn't want it any other way, or what a boring place work would be! 8O
yeah, no probs...but it is better to keep it "in-house"...it does seem a bit inappropriate when you are joking around like that, when clients are around...or worse, if you are on site at a client
the pen is mighter than the sword, but the word is always final
Yeah, a few months ago, in a fit of self importance, me and three colleagues decided to have our communal office sectioned into individual offices – lasted a couple of weeks before we had maintenance put it back – a well timed and imaginative insult just doesn’t carry the same weight and satisfaction if you cant see the persons face.

For sure, if I'm on the phone to a client or have clients in the office it's different, but that's very rare in my division, it's mostly just us...
lol
we are three girls in the office so all we have is girl talk...
