Clocking the X2 3800+

Post by maxxis »

Hi guys

Now that my CPU is on water I need a little help to find my max OC for my CPU

I believe im good for 3ghz. I managed 2.8 on air with my old ram.

Current setup
-> Asus A8N32 SLI Deluxe
-> AMD X2 3800+ Skt 939 Toledo Core
-> 2x 1gb OCZ Platinum Special Edition PC3200 2-3-2-5 timings @ 2.8V
-> Koolance Exos
Can somebody please tell me exactly how to overclock this setup.

Im on 2.4 at the moment for 24/7 operation. Test 100% stable on prime 95 with the CPU on 1.35v

IDLE: 34
FULL LOAD: 42

Any of the guys with similar boards please help me out. I know the basics of clocking but this board is a little tricky.

If you enable CPU overvolt in the BIOS you get a +200mV offset on top of your displayed voltage. Use the ASUS PC Probe software to give you you true voltage reading. You will notice that it maxes out at 1.60V with the 3800+ X2 manchester core no matter what voltage you set in the BIOS which is what prevents this board from being used as the top socket 939 overclocking motherboard. Hopefully it doesn't have this problem with Toledo.

The other really important thing to do is manually set your RAM speed and timings, if you leave anything important on auto in the BIOS it will often choose unstable timings. I manually put in Tras, Tccd, Tcas, Tcrd, command rate and frequency when OCing or the board gets unstable. I'm not too sure about the rest of the timings.

2.8Ghz is a very good OC on that chip, I can't get over 2.6Ghz stable with mine.

Thanks

Im running Overvolt with 1.150V on the CPU in the bios to get 1.35V in total.

Ill see what I can do this weekend.

Any suggestions on timings?

What software works the best in Windows to tweak the clocks with board?

I'm using Kngston KVR so I set the timings to their most relaxed in the BIOS and haven't done much tweaking. I think this is supposed to be the best timing tweaker:

Be careful if you flash the BIOS on that board, my last one started to lose the CMOS settings once a week after I flashed it. It got worse and worse until it wouldn't retain any settings and then stopped booting. Had to RMA it and get a new one. A few people had this problem. Also, if you're running a BIOS below 1103 and you have SLI, you might need to manually set the NB->SB connection multiplier to 5x or it defaults to 2x and gives you bad SLI performance.

I seriously doubt you'll get 3Ghz, but give it a shot...

Just played around and the best I can manage is around 2.75.

Motherboard is good for 347 FSB. 348 and I BSOD

Ill call in the help of the experts at a later stage to show me the finer details.

Im happy with the CPU @ 2.4 24/7. My temps are great and my machine is dead quiet.

Yeah i didn't expect you to get much more than the 2.8 you managed on air (and i dunno how you got that right ;) ) 2.8 is alot for an X2... I think the 4800+ MIGHT get like 2.85 or 2.9 though...

I got my CPU 3200+ Venice to 2.7ghz but not that stable. Was for 3 hrs 39mins then came up with an error.

Now its at 2.6ghz @ 1.55v on water

Cool, i thought 2.8 on air was a bit suspect. My 4400+ could only do 2.77Ghz on water. 2.8Ghz Post.

can only happen with phase change - if at all - and then only if the cpu isnt cold bugged

highest clocks ive seen an X2 on here in SA is around 3.6/3.7 ghz superpi benchable on phase change

well that's not even a overclock,
that's just a insane bois settings bashing and save
and PC reboots,

"on post" is like dreaming :lol:
