CRT or LCD? Best of the best

Post by Gatsby »

Yo dudes,

I am in the market for a new monitor... but I am unsure on whether I should go for a LCD... in which case I would get the Acer AL1951(D)... its the one that got 90% in the latest PCF or whether I should stick to CRT.

I have a few questions firstly:

My rig is a bit underpowered, will it be a bad idea to get a LCD if I wont be able to play some games at the native resolution?

Is the quality of LCD screens better than CRT, picture wise?

Or should I stick to the devil I know and get another CRT? ... my last one died.

Here is the Acer I wanna get... http://global.acer.com/products/monitor/5_series.htm

Help, Help!

When you use your LCD you MUST play at native resolution else you lose a bit of quality... Which is kinda sucky...

What is your price range? What PC Do you have?

i have the 1951D, best monitor I have ever worked on, I will never go back to anything smaller than 19" and I will never willing use a CRT ever again!

Incredible were selling that monitor for R2700 which is an excellent price
What I type has nothing to do with the people that employ me.

My PC sucks big time, but I will upgrade mid 2007.

In brief its a P4 3.0, 1G RAM, 9800XT. Was a pretty awesome rig back in 2004 LOL!

Price range isn't really an issue. I wanna get the best there is. I want quality. I want a visual orgasm every time I turn it on... catch my drift?

Get LCD... You should be able to run at the upped resolution, if you just drop shadows in most games till you have the chance to upgrade...

I always used a 17" Viewsonic CRT, which was great... About a week ago I bought 2 19" LCD's... helluva difference. I got the Hanns-G HU196A from Rectron... Nothing wrong with them. And they're about R1500 each.

LCD, I had a similiar system, only with a 6800 instead.
I went to a 19-inch 1280 x 1024 screen, and I never looked back to my old CRT.

I also want to buy myself a BenQ 17" 4ms response, but I don't have the money right now to buy a 19". So should I rather wait and buy a 19" or should I go for a LCD ( even if it's a 17" ) at the moment. This will be my 1st LCD :D

My sister's PC has a 17-inch LCD
I felt totally constrained with it.
so small.

but do you mean 19-inch CRT? or 19-inch LCD now?

I waited and saved up for a 19-inch LCD and I'll never looked back.
It was my first LCD...

Depends on what you want to do with it...

At work I still use CRT monitors because of colour callibration issues.

At home I use LCD because they save space and because at home I don't need colour accuracy.

I just bought a 32" LCD TV and this week I'll pick up a cable to output my computer into the TV's PC input... should be interesting to see how games look on it hehehe.

So I should rather save and buy a 19" LCD?
I can get a Hanns-G 19" LCD 6ms for R1700. I don't know Hanns-G that well, but it's a 19" though.

Leigh is right, for gaming online, such as CS:S, 4ms is the standard.
However, if just playing casually and not competitive online games, such as Guild Wars, WoW, and so on 6ms is fine.

@Leigh : a 32" LCD TV... man... that'll need some serious hardware...
tell me what you get performance wise!

Hanns-G's site is crap slow... I've got two of those. I've played BF2 on them. You gotta have Nikon-grade shutters for eyes to see faster than 6ms, so they be fine...

So??? This means that 6ms is still okay for gaming. Cuz I play COD 2 online. There's almost a R1000 difference between a Hanns-G 19" 6ms and a BenQ 19" 2ms. So I am kind of confused about what to buy at the moment. But thanks for the replies thus far guys

I say definitely go for an LCD. CRTs are getting old, if you're gonna get a new screen may as be one that'll last a while.

I'm getting my BenQ 19" LCD 2ms today, very happy about it I've had this BenQ 17" CRT forever.. :D

At the moment the BenQ 19" with 2ms is on special, so you should be able to find one for around R2000, but I'm not sure how long the special is gonna last. Will probably be back to the old price of about R2500 pretty soon.

That goes double for me...

You guys do know that even with a 0ms response rate a conventional LCD display would blur when displaying fast moving images?

A lot of LCD manufacturers also BS with their response times.

The BenQ FP93GX 19" LCD for example. They say that it's 2ms, but examine those specs more closely and you see it's actually 6ms, the 2ms is only grey to grey.

ViewSonic on the other hand, which happens to be my LCD manufacturer of choice, quotes theirs properly, like in the case of the VX922 19", the G2G is 2ms and so is the white-black-white which is the true response time.
