Oops I deleted ntldr

Post by reyals »

After I was inspired by this gr8 mags software i decided im smart enough 2 delete my own junk files :? anyhow, i deleted ntldr on my first partition (not my windows partition) and got the wonderful error message 'ntldr not found' (or whatever) so i decided that i will have 2 redo windows (Yipee!) but i thought 2 myself that starting to install windows will instal an ntldr so all i have to do is change the boot.ini file on my first partition to boot the windows installation on the second partition, for some reason that did not work :( heheh. any way i can get my old windows installation back, there is a lot of drivers etc. that i dont have anymore, now i can geet the drivers 4m the old windows systemfiles, but i am a lazy old sod,so i would appreciate some (good) advice :!:

Welcome to the forums! Hope you have a great stay...

okay this is very difficult to trouble shoot but i am going to try... on which partition was your windows installation installed on? 1 or 2? by the sounds of it one...

Try this fix

Or look at Microsofts website

I'm not saying this will work, but hey you can give it a try :

Boot from XP CD, press R to repair. Choose the windows installation to log into (its guesswork but you're looking to log onto your old windows install).

The two commands you are wanting to use are:

FIXBOOT

FIXMBR

READ the above links. Try fixboot first, if no dice, try fixmbr.

*sketchy on these details, so other forumites please correct me if I'm wrong*

I'd also recommend "chkdsk /r" to sort out if you lost anything else... how did you delete that file anyway?

*edit* LOL! changed *fdisk* to *chkdsk*

Try this

-boot from windows cd.
-go to recovery console.
-enter choice and password
-type the following:
'copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ '
(where D:\ is your cd drive and C:\ is your harddrive)

i still recommend the "chkdsk /r" ... honestly... or perhaps the second repair option (after booting from the CD) coz there's and incredibly good chance that he's managed to wipe out hundreds of other important files...

OMG! gonna change my first post in this thread! LOL! I had just got back from a club and was... a little tipsy...

Here's your solution:

1) Insert the windows disc.

2) Boot from it and when it asks what you want to do,click on repair windows.

3) It will then ask you for a command prompt or something then just type in FIXBOOT and press enter.

4) It will be done in a few seconds then just type in EXIT and reboot the PC

I've got the quickest fix of all, take your hdd out, and put it on a table (remember to place a anti-static bag underneath, you don't want to damage it). Then take a office file and write ntldr on it, place on the hdd and hit the file with a hammer, repeatedly. This should force the file back onto the hard drive.

You forgot the part stating it should be written small, so as to not take too much space on the HDD. :D

Or better yet ask old Bill to come fix it for you.
