Very very true, learning Delphi is fun and helps you understand the fundamentals of basic programming. Today we started to use ms access databases in Delphi.Doomextreme wrote:TheModDoctor
Same.
I like the way they have it in a more understandable writing.
e.g:
Begin
lblDisplay.Caption
It makes it easier to understand .
I still got a lot to catch up. I develop in Vb6. Developing Wheel alignment software, job cards, workshop modules, customer relations ETC...
I never studied programming. Learnt from books and tutorials. Still want to go and develop in Visual c++ to be my primary Development enviroment.
My profession is software develping. I must say that i can write code for hours and hours without getting sick of it.

and a warm forum welcome to TimJL ... always a pleasure to meet another codemonkey...
be sure to stop by this thread and give us a brief glimpse of the character behind the nick...
we have one or two members here who punish themselves by playing with embedded app development

I'm a BSc Hons Biotechnologist currently working as an environmental consultant in the mining industry which I enjoy, but for the love of me can curse for not having gone into the IT industry from first year, but listened instead to the "the market is flooded and the working is boring yadaya". Not that I dislike what I'm doing, always just had a passion for PCs, got a distinction in matric for computer science and programmed in Pascal.
Now that I'm earning decent money though, I'm pondering studying part-time, but the where to go and what to do bothers me. What would you guys say is the most fun job in the IT industry (programming, network admin etc) and what should I study/where? I've dabbled in C++ but going to have to start from scratch, but I think it might be worth it. Where's the jobs and money in this country WRT IT?

Starting your own company. If you work for someone, you won't get big money unless you move up the ladder to project manager and from there further up to senior management to CTO. There is good money to be made engineering hardware and software for the mining and other industrial/commercial applications. I'd assume that there's also big money in the boring financial sector, writing software for banks or stocks and economy simulations / predicition etc. So you need to specialize in something and combine it with writing software. Maybe you could put your biotech degree to use while writing software?Where's the jobs and money in this country WRT IT?

Re: So Who is a Programmer On The Forum?
Hi, I got into development 2 years ago at the age of 31 ... so your never too old. The IT industry is wide open to anybody wanting to work. Your choice of dev language is less important than your OS. I develop in PHP for LINUX.
I'm currently doing my BSC with UNISA (started this year) and they offer some great short courses (6 months). Its not about learning C or JAVA its about setting the foundation for programming. Also do consider SQL as your databases will most likely outlive your code.
You get so many different types of developers that only once your in the industry can you take a direction. I will warn that you would need to take a salary sacrifice if you want to do this. Don't expect to earn a senior developers salary in your first couple of years.

Re: So Who is a Programmer On The Forum?
I started out in high school with java. then went to college and did VB.net, cobol, java(again), HTML, javascript(there is a difference), c++, asp.net, SQL. now i am working at my job for the last two months and now starting to learn PHP. The funny thing is that although i learnt all that stuff at college. when i started working i found just how little i acctually learnt in comparison to how much more there is to learn. so much that it made me feel that i really wasted 3 years of my life studying when i could have learnt it all and gotten paid to do it at work.
