PCF Live costs

Post by OnlyOneKenobi »

I'm considering upping my home internet connection and PCF Live looks like a good option. Keep in mind that I am an ADSL noob so I would just like to know what extra or other costs would be involved. How much would the line installation cost, and does one still need to pay telcom for line rental or is this included in the monthly payment?

Don't know much about PCF live, but telkom still charges line rentals irrespective of who the service provider is.

I don't need a massive cap or webspace or large email capacity so I was looking at the 2gb cap one from www.pcflive.co.za

R200 per month didn't sound so bad but I forgot that I would still need to rent the line which also costs a fair bit, doesn't it... I wouldn't really be able to afford much more than R200 or R300 at most a month for internet.

R200 a month for 2GB isn't exactly cheap. From SAOL you can get 5GB for R299 and then a 384 line from Telkom for R270 I think.

Guys, have a look at http://www.cybersmart.co.za
neon, hexXie, bobendren and I are with them. They have the lowest prices you'll find anywhere, and their customer support is awesome. As for service, there haven't been any problems at all. The way they work is that you select a package that corresponds to your line speed, so that they dont have to reserve unneccessary bandwidth for you.

The only cheaper option than Cybersmart is OpenWeb I think. But I don't have experience with them, so I can't comment on their services.

But seriously have a look at the CyberSmart pricing. Their 3Gb cap is:
3 Gig CAP on 192/64 Kbs Circuit = R100.00
But then Telkom line rental is, erm, R370 a month for the 192 ADSL, which is now to become a 384 circuit. And the prices are gonna drop by around R15 for the line rental.
Don't quote me on line rental prices though. Rather check for yourself, though I'm pretty sure these are right.

No they aren't right, it's R270 not R370...

I'm very happy with SAOL, so would highly recommend them as well. How much is a 10GB account on Cybersmart?

I think he is adding the R99 for the privilege () of having a standard telkom line.

Wait, scratch that. This is correct:

Standard Line Rental Fee: R99.00
ADSL 192 Line : R245.00
CyberSmart 3Gig CAP on 192 Circuit : R100.00

Total: R444

All 192 lines are being upgraded to 384 though for a lower price, and taking into account that you'll need a 384 account from Cybersmart, the pricing will stay about the same, and you'll have a 384 line instead of a 192 line. :-)

[edit] - I'd forgotten the R99 for standard line rental which you need to pay as well - just included it as well.

Well there you have it. R444 for a 192 ADSL line, which will effectively be a 384 line in August.

It depends on the line you have. You pay different amounts depending on the line you have. For example, if you have a 192 line, you will pay R100 per month, which gets you 3Gb. If you need extra bandwidth, you will pay an additional R165 for every 3Gb that you purchase. This is on the 192 line. On faster lines this will obviously be more.

still hectic

that is still very expensive no matter which one you take compared to any other decent country. i think the goverment, for the sake of this country's technological future, should really consider a subsidised solution for us here in south africa, maybe even let telkom offer us much lower rates, maybe at cost, they then should be able to get a tax rebate and everyone should be happy.
