SuSE 10.1

Post by AlphA »

Picked up a copy from Linuxworld today. Got 32-bit and 64-bit. Busy installing the 64-bit version on my main machine right now. Will let you guys know how the install goes.

Also picked up a copy of Fedora Core 5. Will install it on one of my machines at work...

*sigh* The 64-bit version seems to be non-existant here in Durban. Does anyone know where I can get it in Durbs? Our Linux Toaster at vartisty doesnt have it.

The Freedom Toaster didn't have the 64-bit version either. I got the original CD's from the Novell stand at the exhibition.

I am gonna make a DVD version of the 5-CD version I have.

I could mail you a copy if you like. Let me know.

I'll wait for the next few SuSEs to come out before I upgrade again.

Trust me there are some nice (front-end) changes with 10.1.

Like old SuSE releases...the eye-candy is good ;-)

Exactly, I can't buy 5 cds every month to make a new SuSE copy, my dad already flipped becasue I have somany older copies at home. I'll wait for a really good version to come out (maybe something like SuSE 10.3 or something) and then I'll burn again.

EDIT : And besides, its formatting, reinstalling, downloading programs that were in the older SuSE version but not in the new one (like MP3 playability, NASM, Acrobat Reader, etc) and its more of a hastle for me now, really.

The installation is part of the fun ;-)

CD's/DVD's are cheap......throw the old ones out once you're happy with running the new one. The last release of SuSE was 10.0, released last year around October/November. To use 1 DVD or 5 CD's once every 6 months aint that bad!

To each his own.....I guess.

ok, if you guys PM me your details....I will send you a copy...dont know if I'll get it down this weekend. I have a pretty busy day tomorrow. Maybe Sunday (if Postnet is open)

EDIT : I managed to convert the 32-bit version of 10.1 to a DVD ISO. Not having much luck with the 64-bit version. I created the disc, but the installer could not find the list of packages to install. So, as of now, I only have the 32-bit DVD ISO working.

10.1 feels a lot more responsive than 10.0. Nice improvment.

I installed Suse 10.1 last night as well. Actually got the cd's with AlphA and showed him how to convert to dvd ;)

So far I really dig the blue theme and it does start up way faster than 9. Had a few issues but the only one left is the installing the NVidia drivers and getting it to be used.

I'm a linux n00b but so far its doing as much as windoze so I'm happy!

I see 10.1 was a bit buggy!

10.2 is out but still has a bug that I'm waiting for to get fixed. Still Alpha version. Then I'll get it.

Buggy indeed. I ran it for about 5 days.....then uninstalled. I've been running Kubuntu Dapper since it was released on June 01. So far, so good.

Trust me, you're a lot better of with 10.0 than 10.1 (for now). Actually, I should remove that "yay!" from my original post's subject.

I found it not to be very stable.....Had several KDE crashes. APT package manager is poorly implemented. YaST is MUCH slower than it was.

Why do you have to create the partition in Windows? You can create at install-time of Linux.
