What is CPU Stepping
What is CPU Stepping
I've just bought my New Athlon 64 3200+ CPU with a code of ADA3200DAA4BW
The week of manufacture is 0603.
Now during all my research all the Venice core reviews point to the stepping having a code of BP which is Stepping E3, CPUID 2F , single processor, 0.09 micron, socket 939
My chip is BW which is Stepping E6, CPUID 2F, single processor, 0.09 micron, socket 939
Both the BP and BW seem to be identical except for the Stepping code, E3 vs. E6
does anyone know exactly what this difference is?

You're gonna have to wait for one of the more nerdy members to log on, but I'm sure it can't mean all that much, I think the manufacturers make some slight adjustment and then just slap a different letter at the end.
I read something that might possibly suggest that the vcore on the E3 runs at 1.35V while the E6 runs at 1.4V.

These are the current 3200+'s:

I think they were released in the order they appear. So the newest is the E4 "CG" while the "BI" (Winchester) is the earlier of the four. As far as i know the BP, BW and CG are all referred to as Venice.

Are you sure flytek? I don't remember the E4 being there 2 months ago when i last checked, but the E6 was.Flytek wrote:basically the e6 is the latest revision of the cpu.
it is likely to have the best memory controller for compatability with the largest amount of memory modules.
i'd be interested in seing th full bottom line of codes too.
if you havn't installed it that is.
The E4 is the san diego core, correct?
I found this at anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/sh ... spx?i=2622
Unfortunately already installed.Flytek wrote:basically the e6 is the latest revision of the cpu.
