At the moment, the available updates all works fine, so it's safe to update, but you should update in anycase.

How do I download the updates to save it on my HDD?
I Format a lot and don't wanna download them every time.
I'm still using dial-up and on pre-paid.

The best is to download Windows XP Service Pack 1 (133MB) and the Windows XP RollUp 1(9 MB). It will leave you with about 12 updates which you can either download via the windows update site or use the windows (http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... LN];kbjump ) knowledgebase site to download the updates by searching for their KB article ID numbers(The ID numbers will be listed by the windows update site)! If you use the update site you can copy the updates from "<driveletter> :\Documents and Settings\<Windows Username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files" folder to a different folder and use it to reinstall the updates at a later stage. (The folder is hidden but you can make it visible by setting the folder options). As this is a temp folder you must copy the files out of the temp folder before you reboot else the files will be deleted. Hope this help.

Critical means critical, so yeah - those are the minimum you should download. They fix major security holes in Windows through which viruses and hackers can get in. The security hole through which the MS Blaster worm nailed a lot of people had actually been patched months before, but people didn't bother updating, so they got hammered.

Can't give you the address for each and every patch, so go to WindowsUpdate first and take note of what individual patches you need - from there go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/ and search for each patch and download it individually then write it to CD.

After that, it's a matter of keeping an eye on that site and getting each critical patch as it's released. If there's an easier way, I don't know of it, apart from signing up for Microsoft's Security bulletin - which you can do on that site.

Edit: Found a better link - shows all patches in chronological order here
