Re: 3D Mark 2006
Now that I have installed the new GPU, namely the Asus EAH5970, I thought I'll do a little comparison between my previous set of cards (2 x GTX280 in SLi) and the new one, and here it is:
The old system (2 x GTX280 in SLi) - just before I changed cards
the the new system (ATI 5970)
An increase of about 1450 points
I also did a comparison with 3DMark Vantage and that's and interesting one (at the 3DMark Vantage thread)

My new system
Completely standard - no OC.
I really dont see the need, but just for interest sake - what do you experts think I can get it up to with OC?
And the more important question of course - for the hardware, is this score "on par"?

Nice score....looks fine to me as I get 19 odd thousand on my current setup, but thats with a 900mhz OC on CPU and Ocing my GFX aswell...would love to see what I would get with an i7.HappyLoner wrote:My new system

As for your score after Ocing, I guess it all depends how much you OC by...try it and see what you can get.
BTW, post your full PC specs.

Do you mean the full specs as in screen captures from 3DMark, or you just want a list? Can provide screen capture when at home tonight, do have specs more or less in my head... they are:
Coolermaster CM Stacker 830- NVIDIA SLI certified , black + meshed side panel ,
Coolermaster RSA00-AMBAJ3 Silent power pro 1000w ( 12v: 960w ) , EPS12V V2.92 + SSi + ATX 12V V2.3 , Modular cable management
Intel lga1366 i7 950 - Quad core+Hyper-Threading / 8 threads , 3.06ghz box cpu
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD5870 1GB
2 x Corsair TR3X6G1333C7 , XMS 3 , with heatsink , 3 x 2Gb/2048mb kit (12GB Total)
ASUS P6T SE ; LGA1366/i7 mb
Samsung art series P2770H , rose black , touch buttons design , stylist crystal neck , with power-saving , 27" Wide
2 x Western Digital, 1TB/1000gb, sata3G , 7200rpm, 32mb cache
Logitech Wireless Laser Desktop
LG GH22LS40 , 22x , Lightscribe , Sata
Oh yeah - Im not really interest in overclocking at this stage (dont know enough on the subject yet) but would like a "guess"from an expert on where he/she thinks this system can be overclocked to (keeping in mind that a liquid-cooling system can be added to the case). Just a ballpark maximum guess?

My new system with CPU @ 3GHz and RAM at 1432mhz CL9. Not too bad for the price?

Re: 3D Mark 2006
You won't be able to say a maximum without testing because each chip is different, but if most i7 chips are anything to go by you should be able to clock it anywhere between 4GHz and 4.5GHz fairly easily. The higher you go the higher you'll have to increase the voltage though, and that is bad for heat and chip life.
The max you'll reach also depends on PSU and Motherboard, but I see you have no issues there. I also have a P6T and easily reached over 4GHz on my 920 chip...
Your 5870 could also be overclocked, but nowhere near as much as the CPU. I'd say maybe around 10% when it comes to GPU's...

So on average, with some tweaking, I can get up to a (roughly) 20% better score?ryanrich wrote:You won't be able to say a maximum without testing because each chip is different, but if most i7 chips are anything to go by you should be able to clock it anywhere between 4GHz and 4.5GHz fairly easily. Yes, more or less. Compared to stock my 3D Mark 06 score is around 30% higher.

Re: 3D Mark 2006
Nice looking score there ryan. Try getting uncore up and look at QPI too. That should bring your CPU score up and give you a few 100. if you drop memory clock a little you might gain 10~30 mhz more on core.
Re: 3D Mark 2006
Thanks R3D! Will play around some more with the CPU clocks...
Some updates with the GTX 480...

Re: 3D Mark 2006
So after benching for the entire day I decided that I was sitting on a gold mine. I have all this cool gear and I never post any benchmarks on the site.
Setup:
Core i7 975 @ 4GHz
Asus Rampage III Gene
GSkill Trident Triple channel DDR3-2000 6GB @ 1800MHz
HD5970 (ES) 820MHz (Cores) 1200MHz (Mem)
I am using a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with the stock fan.
This is the first run where both CPU and GPU are OCed. I have to head home now so I will tweak some more over the next few days and see what happens.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Next week I will have more free time to do some benching. I plan to use the Asus Sabertooth and see how far I get with that.

Oh whoops. Was posting in the other thread...
A victory for team green it is then!
With some tweaking you could score higher. But then again with some DDR3-2000 RAM so could I...

Re: 3D Mark 2006
Ran out of time last night. Benching a ECS P55 board today so i might push it and see how much I can get out of it. Got some Geil DDR3-2200 memory so it could be an interesting day.
I also discovered before I left that Asus had released a new BIOS that improves stability.

Looking into getting myself some new RAM today. That's about the only component I can still push a little further...

Re: 3D Mark 2006
So today has been interesting. All the USB ports on the ECS P55H-AK died after a BIOS update... ever tried to run benchmarks using only a keyboard?
Decided to use the Asus Sabertooth X58 to bench the Core i7 975. Overclocks are a lot more stable than the Rampage III Gene. Will push more tomorrow and Friday.

who cares? Not my chip, not my board, not my GPU. LOLMolean wrote:What temps are you getting?
I will check the temps tomorrow when I do some more runs.
@ryanrich: yeah if I could get a decent WC setup then I would. I might ask for some budget to at least buy a H50. It took me 2 hours to get the rig up and running and stable for that run. 3 failed runs where the GPU was falling over and at least a dozen where the CPU did not like what I was demanding. The i7-975 that I got just doesn't like any BCLK higher than 150 even with a decent kick up its voltage pants.
