Overclocking
Hi eveyone.
I got a Gigbyte RZ Series motherboard with an SiS 661FX chipset on socket 478 with a P4 Prescott @ 3.0GHz and a Coolermaster cpu cooler. I cant seem to find the miltiplier tweaker in the bios even after pressing cntrl+f1. I've got the lateset firmware update from gigabytes website. How can I get the most out of my cpu? I oc'ed it to 3.28GHz with no changes in idle temperature (50 degrees). I also have a GeForce FX5700LE. How can I increase performance 'till I get enough cash to upgrade?

The only CPU's that are multiplier unlocked are engineering samples, or very high-end chips like the AMD Athlon 64 FX series... for most of us (who can't afford such chips), we have to make due with FSB\voltage increases to attain a OC.

No, you did get a program called SoftFSB, it allowed overclocking from within windows, but it's discontinued. Motherboards with nVidia chipsets can easily be overclocked using a tool called NVtweak (I think), there's lots of programs for overclocking nVidia chipsets, other chipsets however, is much more difficult. Speedfan also has limited overclocking abaility, with very few motherboards supported, but you can still try though

Just for you, here is something that you'll really wet yourself with... I nearly fell out of my seat when I read this! Obviously this was done through the use of some hectic cooling though.

Not that impossible. I run a AMD64 3000+ Venice core at 2.8 (311 * 9) on air cooling and 1.45V and ram timings on Hynix value ram @ 2.5-3-6-3 at 2.7V @200 with a 14 ram divider. Venice is 90nm, Clawhammer is 130nm, much more difficult to push past 3.0Ghz. Very nice OC BTW. You are very, very lucky to get a chip that can do those clocks at that voltage, you basically got an FX-57 for the price of a 3000+. Did you burn the core in first then drop the voltage later? I see lots of people are hyping about burning in a core at higher volts for 24 - 48 hours and then it becomes stable at lower voltage. Some people claim its false and others swear by it. Check this guy posting about running his DC opteron at standard clocks with under 1.0V after he burnt it in at higher frequencies and voltage:Not that impossible. Look for a multiplier setting in the BIOS. It will be close to where you set the FSB in my mobo you need to set allow VID/freq adjustments to yes before you can see it. It will be 13 at the moment, you should be able to set it to 14 to give you 2.8Ghz (FX 57) without any hassle. If your PC doesn't start up after you do this, switch it off and find out where the clear CMOS jumper is in your motherboard manual and clear the CMOS.
You can try get 3Ghz (15x multi), but I don't think you'll get there on air. Watch your temps, don't let them get over 60C.

No, no burn in, this chip has never been over 1.45V. it OCs to 2.6GHz at stock volts as well, but then the mem divider does not make a hell of a lot of sense on my mobo (MSI K8N Neo2 FX) which only supports 133,166,200 and up.
juDge - search for Clockgen for your mobo and then you can set/test the multipliers while in windows - if your BIOS is stable.

No, it is not the same thing. you would for instance have a 2.6GHZ. That would fsb of 200 * 13(multiplier). Now with the FX chip you have the ability to change both the fsb and the multiplier. @JuDge: You can do either in the BIOS or in windows with clockgen. You should use clockgen to test it first and when you are happy, set the BIOS to the values you choose.

See what the people are saying about it. You need to OC your Opty till it fails Prim95 but is still stable in Windows with 1.45-1.49 volts. You then run CPU burn in and switch error checking off. You need to run it for 48 hours without switching your computer off. The voltage you will need to become stable at a certain frequency drops. You can then OC it higher and repeat.
It does work, but people say its just "curing" the AS5 not really increasing the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) which is what increasing the volts actually does inside the CPU. If you read on the AS5 packaging, it talks about only reaching true potential after 200 hours of thermal exposure or something to that effect. I don't know personally, I still need to try it.
It is supposed to work for ALL CPUs (esp 90nm) not just Opterons.
Can you drop the multiplier on normal Athlon 64/X2 chips with clockgen vilaishima? I can't find an adjustment for it.

@JuDge - Download A64Info. This is a very useful tool for setting ram timings and for calculating multiplier/fsb/mem speed.
