Best Cooling Fan for AMD 4000+
Best Cooling Fan for AMD 4000+
Morning Everyone,
Quick Question, what will be the best Air Cooling Fan to get for my AMD 4000+ Socket 939 Processor? Can't afford to get water cooling at the moment but would like to keep the processor cool as possible and maybe a little overclocking

I recommend a Thermalright XP-120 or Si-120 heatsink coupled with a 120mm fan of your choice - I use a 120mm Vantec Stealth. This setup is noiseless/quiet and not only cools your CPU but also your surrounding components and parts Higly recommended Just make sure it fits your motherboard otherwise get the excellent XP-90, Si-90 or SP-90 heatsinks together with a 92mm fan. The SP-90 is pure copper and many users swear by them.

I would so love to do a little upgrading, but can't afford to

XP-120. I reviewed it and I got some insane overclocks, 700Mhz to 2700Mhz, well over 4200+ speeds. At the lowest fan speed, which is damn quiet, I got 43C under load.

Actually, try and look into Thermalrights SI97 / SI120. Both have very little, if none, installation issues while still giving more or less the same performance.

Yea, i just noticed that. The only SI in South Africa is the SI-97. As soon as the SI-120, I'll be sure to post it here.
For information sake, here is what Thermalright heatsinks are avaliable, afaik:
SI-97
SP-97
XP-90
XP-90C <--- This is also insane!
XP-120

Yea. Sunon make decent fans. If you want a feature packed fan, get the Thermaltake 80/92/120mm Smart Fan 2.

Both are good. But we are talking about heatsinks here, not which CPU is better.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't copper a better conductor of heat? I do like the look of the XP-90 and 120, but the all aluminium build put me off. Is the performance really that good?
I wanted to get the Zalman CNPS7000B Cu LED, but my "wonderful" 462 mobo only use the "cleverly designed" lug clips - incompatible. I'm therefore looking at other heatsinks.
You say the Thermalright range is good?

Well, it's not that much better. The 7000Cu runs about 2'C cooler than the 7000AlCu. The XP-90C runs about 3'C cooler than the XP-90. The Xp-120 i think sits somewhere in between the two.mt-warrior wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't copper a better conductor of heat? I haven't listened to that particular fan (or any thermaltake fan for that matter), but judging from their build quality i can't say they're very good. I'm getting an Antec Tri-Cool this week, i think i'll post a mini review on it.

Silver is the best conductor, but copper is used in many heating applications, because it doesn't corrode and has a very high melting point.
Stainless steel is similar to copper in that it doesn't corrode, but it is 30 times worse in conductivity.
The TT heatsinks are made from aluminium though... not silver.
But if you say it's cooling performance is very similar to it's copper counterparts then I'll consider it
BTW: The thermal conductivity of some metals.
copper: 394
silver: 418
aluminium: 238
stainless steel: 13

I recently had the chance to fool around with a 4800+ dual core http://www.pcformat.co.za/modules.php?n ... 1a9e86db3d
I used the same fan I have on my current 3200+, the G-Power Cooler Pro
http://www.giga-byte.com.tw/Peripherals ... U21-MF.htm
& the whole time I was running the chip the temps were averaging 40, the highest as I remember was a 43.
Nice fan, looks good & performs great in my opinion.
My 2 cents worth.
