Overclocking?

Post by Avatar7 »

Should there not be an overclocking section to the forum?

Well any way, i'v got a good ol' P4 1.7 with a 6200 init and was wanderning how far I could take it.

I've got the processor up to 2Ghz, but i can only clock the 6200's memory up (to 539 from 500) not the core. When i tried it it just froze, even if i just pushed it up 1mhz.
Wats the drill?

The Benchmarking section is kinda also the overclocking section, its caption reads: "Post your scores or get advice on how to better them"

As for the 6200, you should be able to either flash it to a 6600 or unlock the extra pipelines. I remember someone posting a link with a nice step by step how to.

dont worry too much bout the core clock. overclocking the memory gives u a better performance boost.

Use rivatuner to unlock the pipes.

heres how to do it.

use this program.

Then go to target adapter
 customize
 Allow enabling hardware masked units
 Customize.

then look for pixel units or vertex units with an X next to them and click on it to change to a tick

Alright, then you're gonna have to flash it with a 6600 bios. Good luck with that.

wtf do u mean by that....
memory bandwidth is more important than peak fill rate.
Most of the time the card isnt utilising its peak fill rate to its full potential.
Especially when the card does not have and equal no of ROPs and pixel pipes.

Wif my old card it made more of a difference when i oc'ed the mem by 40Mhz
than when i oc'ed the core by 40Mhz............Thats a good one hey..

Maybe peak fill rate is more important in the latest ati cards where they Have 16 pixel pipes and 16 ROPs.....

With my new card (6600 Diamond) I observed a similar thing.... It has 8 pipes and 4 rops. i oced the mem clock by 400Mhz and it made an immense difference. That extra mem bandwidth kept those pipes busy and
the fill rate closer to its peak.

Dont u think(as far a pure logic goes) that keeping the card effecient by allowing the fill rate to be closer to its peak by giving it more bandwidth is better than making its peak so high that its actually unattainable..

@ avatar. It seems those pipes are unlocked already, go with wat bob sed and it will allow the card to "see" them

Have a look here: http://www.digital-daily.com/video/peredelki/

This article however reckons they were able to unlock the extra pipelines with rivatuner.

What core does your card have and what make is it?

Is that of any use?

you can only unlock the exra piplines on the old 6200's and even then you have a better chance with an pcie card, considering your cpu i assume that you have the agp version. the reason you can't overclock the new ones is because they don't have the extra pipelines.

but i could be horribly wrong about this.

if it has none to unlock how do u explain the 2 pixel quads shown in the above screenshot.. for those who dont know, each pixel unit represents 4 pipelines

basi what pushes the data through to the memory? if you could up your core and mem you will get excellent scores because the core is now able to push and recieve data faster than before. i think thats what Mr Bean was referring to.

no i understand that.. but cloking the mem makes more of a difference than clocking the core... on all modern GPUs the mem clok is at least 1,5x the clock of the core usually more.........

I agree that clocking them both up will obviously make more of a difference...

maybe cause your card is more memory limited as its ddr1 not ddr3 thats why memory is making more of a difference. But core needs to be oced a lot as well. Push both as high as they will go.. but still be careful :P
