AGP 1x 2x vs. Radeon 8500 Pro card

Post by Tansika »

I´m sitting with a Radeon 8500 pro (64MB) graphics card in my pc but my motherboard AGP slot is a 1x 2x slot. Am I now not using the full potential of my Graphics card and is it then better to upgrade the motherboard. Will the 4x AGP function have a major effect on performance. (I don´t want to spend to much on something that is not going to give me a much better performance.)

I would suggest that you save up for an upgrade to your M/B (motherboard) and/or CPU.
The AGP 1X, 2X, 4X is really speed ratings and refer to the max bandwidth available to the AGP bus. Obviously this means that you will get an increase in speed when you use the AGP 4X instead of AGP 2X.
But be weary of those motherboards out there which states that they "support AGP 4X" only to find out from another website that some video cards, like NVidia GeForce will disable the feature when they detect the specific type of M/B. I made this mistake with the GA-6VX7B-4X M/B from Gigabyte which cannot use AGP 4X with my Gf4 card.
Sorry, no sig yet! Nothing comes 2 mind.
