May be a stupid question, but, what system u running that doom 3 on?
I just wanna know if my system will play it decently fast enough
to avoid me swearing and getting homicidal , coz I got
THE game (current king) but my system wont run it at more than
640 x 480 on low detail settings.
benchmarks are cool, spec lists give an idea, but game testing
by a final user still gives the best idea of minimum specs.

P4 2.8 HT 800FSB
EP-4PCA3+ M/B
1Gb DDR-400 RAM DualChannel
2x 120Gb S-ATA 7200rpm Seagate (Striped onboard raid)
ATI 9700Pro
SB Live
Pretty good I reckon. Specs are almost the same as mine except Ive got the X800 Pro. Although you may have to run it on 1024 x 768 high detail to get good gameplay.
Doom 3
Doom 3 has to be one of the best games i have played in years. I was lucky enough to get it from a friend who bought if for me as a gift in the states. its a pity that i could only play on low detail with a P4 2.4 ghz cpu with HT, 256mb ddr 400 memory and a 128mb ati radeon 9200 video card.
but besides that it was great.

Has anybody noticed the effect vsync has on Doom 3?
This is the first game I can think of where my frame rate has taken such a severe knock from enabling vsync On my humble system I am forced to run Doom 3 on medium detail at a resolution of 1024 x 768 (no AA) and shadows off.
As soon as I enable vsync my frame rate drops to a steady 30 fps, decreasing to about 15 fps in some areas. But if I disable vsync my frame rate almost doubles in those same areas. The only problem is the occassional tearing I notice, but I can live with that given the substantial increase in performance.
Any explenations for this

I really dislike the tearing that disabling vsync causes But until Doom 3 I never actually realised what a substantial performance hit my frame rate is taking because of it
Maybe PCF could do a comprehensive article on the relationship between vsync and monitor refresh rates in an upcoming edition

What is the refresh rate of your monitor Only1? Mine is 85Hz.
I always thought that if your frame rate is higher than the refresh rate of your monitor, and vsync is disabled, you will get tearing in a game. In older games such as Quake 3 and MOHAA this is very evident when you stand in front of an object and move your mouse fast from side to side. However, when you enable vsync (by way of a console command in the case of these two games), the tearing dissapears. In other words it was my understanding that with vsync enabled the frame rate and monitor refresh rate now both run at a steady 85 fps (in my case).
But now Doom 3 has totally confused me about the vsync vs monitor refresh rate issue

Mine is 75hz at 1024x768 and 60hz at 1280x1024, it's old! But I still haven't noticed tearing in anything... Besides I wouldn't worry about VSync or tearing issues in Doom 3 since it's unlikely your framerate will ever go over 85 or even 75 fps.

Now that is the funny thing. I know there is now way in hell that my system would be able to surpass 85 fps. In fact I think think the graphics engine has been limited to 60 fps. But nonetheless I still notice tearing in areas where I am able to hit the 60 fps limit. Very strange 8O
