Ideally, you'd have an RSS feed per category (i.e. one for Hardware, one for Software, one for Modding, and so forth). Could maybe have parent forum feeds automatically incorporating subforum feeds (e.g. the Modding feed would include the Project Logs topics as well). Like I said, it depends on how the phpBB development team decides to implement it - I'll see how involved I can get with the development process and see if I could influence things a bit.

As far as RSS feed readers go, for when this eventually comes - there are plenty of freeware ones out there, and IIRC even Outlook 2007 has a built-in feed reader.
If you look at how Reddit works, I think you are referring to something similar? Basically you have a feed for each section of the forum and then users are able to create their own "Active Topics" page by "subscribing" to the feeds that interest them. Then, based on user preference, their Active Topics page simply parses all the feeds to which they are subscribed.

Sounds easy enough in theory.

However, in practice it may kill your brain :(

I think that is a brilliant idea. I second it!

You do know that you can already search the tech sections only, right?

Yes - but being able to mark something as really valuable would be great.

Yeah but having a place to look for open vs closed tech queries would be great. Or we should make a point of locking all tech queries once it has been resolved. So peeps can see what is worth reading and what is not.

Just a thought, I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but if not...

Karma?

Basically the ability to UP/DOWN users' karma based on their posts. A sort of self-regulating system wherein users are rewarded for well thought-out and interesting posts, or are "punished" for spam/OT/etc. comments.

No you will cause Tribble to go into the negatives and we can't have that

On the serious side. Ron2K it could be a viable option though if implemented correctly. What is your thoughts?

I think that a reputation system would be great. I used to HATE rep systems, but after seeing it implemented perfectly on the 360 forum, i think it's a great idea. They actually have a "Thank you" button under each post, and you can thank members for contributing.

Agreed - I don't want to be kicked off the board. No Karma points. We have that in Ronny's IRC and it is so unrealistic

It would also be a viable way to judge a member's standing on the forum that doesn't involve a postcount. Some people may post quite rarely, however the few posts they do make may very well be Pulitzer-winning stuff (I am in no way referring to myself) causing each reader to re-evaluate their lives in the face of awesome in such pure form (okay, I totally am).

I just think that, when I read a very useful/helpful/interesting post, I often find myself wanting to show my appreciation in some way. Also, when someone posts something really retarded, I would rather just dock their rep than get into a flamewar about it.

This could also be used to rate threads, thereby giving us another possible way to view active topics (view highest-rated threads?).

I have vivid recollections of Mr. Admin saying that rep systems are too easily abused and will thus never see the light of day on PCF. I cannot recall whether the Mr. Admin in question was Ronald or Cameron. Possibly it was a partially-obscured vision of the future. Muad'Dib has those sometimes.

But because he does not exist, those visions you peak of must be fictitious?

they use the rep system on the best base scenario and the thank you system on the smokstak forums. :)
that said, TBCS is V bulletin :?

I'm against karma systems, so too was Cameron if I correctly recall.

1. A small popup alert in the corner that can be enabled/disabled that shows registered users coming online or going offline.

2. A "chat" bar that only registered users, obviously, can access. It will be fun but more importantly, should cut down on random, stupid and unnecessary spam threads being created.

On the side? Like a sidebar?

Do you honestly believe that random, stupid and unnecessary spam threads will ever become a thing of the past?

tried that one before... did not work.. in fact the sperm increased ;)
"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

Yes - if we had a chat room I am sure a lot of rubbish would be cut down. But not sure most companies that block things like msn and gmail would let it through. I am sure they would block the site.

Please can we get a wap version? This past week I haven't had a computer and accessing the forum via cell using opera mini is not ideal for extensive usage.

Ron, please don't kill me for suggesting this again

I disagree.

On vBulletin forums it's possible to have "Thanks" and "No Thanks" buttons, each adding or deducting 1 point from a user's rep.

If you were to use the built-in vBulletin rep system then some users have hectic rep influence though, so I suppose that's what you meant when you said it could be abused. But from what I've seen, using those "Thanks" buttons, there's no abuse whatsoever.
