Aluminium is a good idea, since it is light and strong. Did I mention easy to work with?
It would look super sleek with a single panel, but methinks it is a personal choice :). The only difficulty would be with the front panel, unless you are skilled in the art of moulding and such.

i am skilled in the art of plastic welding, me thinks i will make up a new front panel thats full length from Alu chanel and plate... and make it part of the underneath for strength. now if i could just get my dad to by the bits to fix the CO2 welder i could learn to do alu...

thinking of changing to Deep Blue Rising... what do you think...

Edit: can anyone guess what these are, first person to PM me the correct answer gets a noddy badge...

i found them attached to the remains of an old mass spectrometer on the varsity scrap heap...

Better now than later...and it would be quite fitting 'cause the case is going to be taller :)

Aha, so you'd actually be making it in a kind of an "L" shape?

Not sure, they are potentiometers basically...

I might mod a keyboard, make up some whetstone bridges or something and make it work the WASD keys etc or make a simple joystick... not sure... several ideas come to mind, big concern is how to minimize current through the joysticks... it would be a tragic waiste though if i did not make use of the proportional control aspect...

Edit: one is a 3 axis - x,y and a twist knob on the top...
the other is a singel axis with only an x axis...
